Nick117 Posted September 17, 2003 Posted September 17, 2003 My brother's pretty weak. I mean, he's really short, skinny, and um... weak. My dad wants him to take up a MA to learn how to defend himself. I can literally knock him down with my pinky. Anyway, what would be best for him? We have (in our area) judo, aikido, tang soo do, tae kwon do, hapkido, taiji, some kung fu schools (not sure what styles, I'm gonna find out soon, one's called "Northern Shaolin Wushu Academy", any idea what they teach? Wushu, as far as I know is a generic term for Chinese MAs, I was thinking maybe the "Northern Shaolin" part would help you guys figure out what style(s) it is. Either way I'm gonna call.) Thanks. P.S. He's only like 5 years younger than me (I'm almost 16.) He's 11 so it's not like I knocking a 5 year old down lol. (When I said I could knock him down with my pinky finger lol.)
kataman Posted September 17, 2003 Posted September 17, 2003 If he was my brother I would direct him in Hapkido or aikido they are 2 arts that rely on techniques more than strengh.Of corse sometime age is an issue if it is in you part of the world then I would suggest judo. I don't train for belt color I train to survive on the street
Radok Posted September 17, 2003 Posted September 17, 2003 I would suggest either weightlift-do or calestenics-jutsu. j/k, but for someone with that little strength, definately go with an art that revolves around technique. That pretty much means Aikido. If you can't laugh at yourself, there's no point. No point in what, you might ask? there's just no point. Many people seem to take Karate to get a Black Belt, rather than getting a Black Belt to learn Karate.
Pacificshore Posted September 17, 2003 Posted September 17, 2003 What ever art he's comfortable in, and remember he won't be 11 forever nor will he be "little" Di'DaDeeeee!!!Mind of Mencia
battousai16 Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 well, i second the "whatever he's comfortable with". if he dosen't have fun with it, he wont want to learn. i'll also say that when i was 11 and 12, i was a very small guy too. i was fast and i was tall, but very skinny and weak. i turned 13 and BAM! soon enough i was actually overweight and i grew even more. i got most of the weight off thanks to cross country and the martial arts, but it was just amazing that over 1 summer i could have grown so much! i'm with pacificshore, he probably wont be little forever "I hear you can kill 200 men and play a mean six string at the same time..."-Six String Samurai
Radok Posted September 22, 2003 Posted September 22, 2003 Hey, you do Cross Country? What is your 5k time? If you can't laugh at yourself, there's no point. No point in what, you might ask? there's just no point. Many people seem to take Karate to get a Black Belt, rather than getting a Black Belt to learn Karate.
battousai16 Posted September 22, 2003 Posted September 22, 2003 my PR is 17:59 i just shot it up from 20:21 at my last meet "I hear you can kill 200 men and play a mean six string at the same time..."-Six String Samurai
Radok Posted September 23, 2003 Posted September 23, 2003 Hot diggetty d@m! If you can't laugh at yourself, there's no point. No point in what, you might ask? there's just no point. Many people seem to take Karate to get a Black Belt, rather than getting a Black Belt to learn Karate.
battousai16 Posted September 23, 2003 Posted September 23, 2003 well, there was a lot of time and training in between those 2 meets. the 20:21 was the last meet of the last season and the 17:59 was the first meet of this season, so it's not quite so impressive.
