Hi, There is a school near me that teaches Judo and Jujitsu into one class. I want to take BJJ more than anything, but the nearest school is 70 miles away. I want to take the next best thing, but I am not sure if this school would be right for me. The school's website is https://www.twincitiesjudo.com. Thanks for your help.

Judo and some ju-jitsu schools will teach a lot of the same things on the ground as BJJ.

The biggest differences are emphasis. BJJ emphasizes groundwork, whereas most Judo schools emphasis throwing and only enough groundwork to survive on the ground until the match is restarted.

An armbar is an armbar and a choke is a choke, but the transitions and set-ups are what set BJJ apart. There are of course some great newaza experts in Judo, but generally the sophistication and the intricies are at a much higher level in BJJ.

JohnnyS is right. But you also say they teach Ju Jitsu. So watch a few classes and you might have a great combination. The judo to work on throws and the ju jitsu for the groundwork. After all, BJJ is what is popular right now. And I'm not knocking it's effectiveness. But, at the end of the day it's still ju jitsu. And the training you CAN get is better than the best training that you cannot get.

Join the club. You will be more advanced when you do finally get into a local BJJ school.

Judo Focus more on throws because they are harder to do then ground work, but you will still learn plenty of ground moves. As for Juijutsu/Judo combo schools, that is the kind I go to, and we have a few guys to go to BJJ tournaments on a regualr bases. Sometimes they do pretty well.

Take the Judo Jujutsu. It's closer and you will get alot out of it. Hopefully it's a good school. Study for a couple of years and go to BJJ school for a few lessons I'm sure the transition will be easy for you once you are proficient in Jujutsu and Judo. Neither of these Arts are better than the other. Better is a matter of taste not a matter of fact.

Good idea. When I get a car i'll just drive the 70 miles to Sacramento and take the class. It should be worth it. i'm actualy considering moving to San Diego just to enroll in a BJJ school.
