Judo Warrior Posted September 13, 2003 Posted September 13, 2003 Hi Everybody I am Kakarotto and I am 14 years old. I have a big interest in martial arts. There is a Yang style Tai Chi school near me and a Judo school near me.What do u guys recommend for me to join? Please don't go off topic and choose another art other than yang tai chi or judo.I'm joining judo or tai chi for self-defence and fitness. Please don't say take both just choose one. Thank u! - A coward dies a thousand deaths, A warrior dies but once.- No matter how strong the wind is, The mountain cannot bow to it.
Icetuete Posted September 13, 2003 Posted September 13, 2003 u might wanna ask in the "getting started" channel. i'm sure it'l be moved - get much more help there. as for ur problem; i dont know much about this Tai Chi u mentioned but Judo is said to be very well for both fitness and self-defense. visiting both cant be wrong and perhaps u r able to take a few training lessons for free. since u wont find out what style u wanna do for the next years by taking one or two classes, u better talk to the instructors and/or students abuot what u expect from the art and about the school. then decide what u r more comfortable with. besides, when u realize after a year or whatever, that the style isnt right for u, u can still go check the other. when u cant make up ur mind at all, u can still join both j/k p.s.: welcome to the forums.

sano Posted September 13, 2003 Posted September 13, 2003 judo of course tai chi is for old people. falcon kick!!!
mikS Posted September 13, 2003 Posted September 13, 2003 judo of course tai chi is for old people. You're wrong. Tai chi is NOT only for old people. What you're looking for is taichichuanfa (martial tai chi). If you can find a Tai Chi teacher who teaches it as a MARTIAL art, then pick tai chi. if not then judo is also good.
Karateka_latino Posted September 14, 2003 Posted September 14, 2003 (*You're wrong. Tai chi is NOT only for old people. What you're looking for is taichichuanfa (martial tai chi). The First and ONLY time i was exposed to that, it was from a Instructor who came from China to teach a yang tai chi chuan seminar. It's very dificult to find a Instrutor who's going to teach you the Real Combat Tai Chi. So, If you are hoping to get some kind of self defense training, try Judo. Its easier to find someone who can teach you the martial arts aspects of Judo. Good Luck.
battousai16 Posted September 14, 2003 Posted September 14, 2003 well, remember that nothing beats visiting the schools. you could join a school called "dojo teaching the greatest super duper ultra killer style", but if the teacher sucks, it wont do you much good. i personally do yang style tai chi and like it, but i've never taken judo, so i can't give you my opinion there. just don't forget that their are indeed combat applications to everything you do in tai chi, it's not just a dance. delta1 Posted September 14, 2003 Posted September 14, 2003 If you can learn it as a martial art, do the Taijiquan-fa. It takes longer to learn than external arts, but at fourteen you have the time. And one day you'll be 54+. By that time, for the vast majority of external stylists, their art is dimminishing rapidly in its effectiveness. Taiji generally comes into its prime in about ten years or more. But from then on it only increases in effectiveness. I wish I'd started Taiji at fourteen. But I started later, and went the external route. As for its being for old people, that's true in a way. Taiji is for all ages, and it is effective against all styles as a stand up fighting art. It also incorporates grappling with chin-na and shui jaio (joint locks and Chinese wrestling). Taiji styles are extremely adaptable. And, while they are primarily gentle and yielding, they can be extremely brutal and deadly if the situation calls for it (though this is generally against their philosophy). Either style is good. But I'd recomend you seriousely look at the Taiji. Freedom isn't free!
Davison Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 judo!!!! Why punch someone when their on the ground when you can just kick them
Yet another TKD guy Posted September 22, 2003 Posted September 22, 2003 Judo. The throws are top notch and the grappling is comperable to Brazillian jiujitsu. I was just owned by a taichi and judo practitioner the other day. His striking was nonexistent, but he kimurad my arm quite nicely. AKA Os3y3ris/Osiris
