Ahh yes, the monkey sound... *Really* neat in person (the effect is lost when it's recorded and played back)... Been meaning to find out the origins of that one; I had thought it was Tibetian but I was taugt it by a southern Chinese/Indo artist (uncle bill).

i too would like to know where the "hi-yaaa" sound came from.

 

i've never heard any actual MA use a kiai that had that particular sound...

Insteresting topic :)

 

I don't even kihap (most of the time) .......... strange as that is, because I do MA. But I feel like a dork everytime I do LOL. And when I do, it's more of a sharp "hey" LOL.

FYI:Shotokan has different sounding kiaps for different situations in their kata. JuJitsu has silent kiaps at certain levels.
