Icetuete Posted September 8, 2003 Posted September 8, 2003 i am wondering about this for quite a time and decided to ask those who probably have the answer: the grapplers themselves; so here it goes. grappling is considered to be very important in self defense and it sure is. it provides u with many ways to defend urself against many different kinds of attack. but how do u end a fight as a grappling-only martial artist? in tournament (be it against strikers or other grapplers) u won the fight once u pinned the guy down/performed a good throw or whatever. but keeps ur attacker willing to get ur purse or to remodel ur face from standing up over and over again? sure, falling on asphalt hurts, espacially when u dont know how to roll, but the purpose of many grappling arts is not to hurt ur opponent. pinning ur opponent down on the street cant possibly work since he might pull out a knife from nowhere and besides, what sense is there in pinning someone down? that cant be it. so how does a grappler end a battle? and what if there are two of them? thanks in advance!
SBN Doug Posted September 8, 2003 Posted September 8, 2003 Ummmm, well I'm not a "pure" grappler, but I can definitely say that even pure grapplers don't go for a pin of the street. They also do not necessarily try to NOT hurt the other person. To answer your question in short, they can choke them unconscious, lock in a joint lock (which turns into a joint break if they don't hold still), rip the shoulder out of socket, break an ankle, flip them and finish with a knee drop. There are numerous other, but those are the first that would be at my disposal. Kuk Sool Won - 4th danEvil triumphs when good men do nothing.
matt jiujitsufighter Posted September 8, 2003 Posted September 8, 2003 1-you can strike from dominant positions 2- you can end it either with a choke or joint lock and personally i use grappling to hurt opponents, because thats what martial arts were designed to do a little boxing, a little wrestling, a little muay thai, and a lot of jiujitsu( brazilian)
Treebranch Posted September 9, 2003 Posted September 9, 2003 Are you talking about ground fighting or grappling? Similarities in both, but different to. At least in Budo Taijutsu which really Old Jujutsu most of the grappling is done standing. You can throw someone and stomp their head, that's an effective finish. Often the throw breaks the person's arm, it's pretty much over don't you think? I would recommend staying on your feet in a real situation because the person may have a weapon. That's why learning to control someone in a standing position is so essential. You can also choke them out in a standing position. After you've trained enough and have good Taijutsu alot of options open up to you in the moment. Most people don't really understand how balance works. If you have a good teacher he will probable teach you the balance points and how to take advantage of them, in unison with using the person's strength and momentum against them. Remember Jujutsu is grappling and has striking in it as well. Some Jujutsu has enought striking that you could just use the striking aspect of it and be very effective. TJS Posted September 9, 2003 Posted September 9, 2003 On the ground you can ... -choke them unconcious -break their arm -break theri wrist -break their sholder -break their leg -break theri neck -break their ankle -strike form a dominant position No one would simply try and "pin someone" in a real fight unless they felt they werent in serious danger or just wanted to Hold ther person until they calmed down or someone broke you up whatever.

shazaam Posted September 30, 2003 Posted September 30, 2003 Matt and TJS are spreading correct. They are absolutely right. There is a rumor going around that if you are getting beaten up by a grappler that you can "tap" and they will pause by habit...at that point do something to escape. It might work, it might not. Better to just go ahead and train in submission grappling along with your regular system. Peace, Love, Harmony
