iolair
What does gup and kyu mean? Does it refer to amount of belts you've tested for?It means grade. The grades, for belt, go backwards in most martial arts, that I've seen. 1st or 0 kyu is usually a blackbelt. Example, I am a high purple belt, high 7th kyu, I believe. I'll check later. The amount of kyu grades (gup is the Korean equivalent, not sure what it is in Chinese?) varies from art to art .... but 8 or 9 is a typical number... i.e. Beginner 9th Kyu 8th Kyu 7th Kyu 6th Kyu 4th Kyu 3rd Kyu 2nd Kyu 1st Kyu 1st Dan (Black Belt) 2nd Dan 3rd Dan etc etc. Currently: Kickboxing and variants.Previously: Karate (Seido, Shotokan, Seidokan), Ju Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, Fencing. benedictbm
Most of my stuff is in my signature but the reason I started Martial Arts is not. This is corny and old but like most of my friends when iwas 5 or 6 i wanted to be a ninja turtle. My mom wouldn't stand me being in such a contact sport at such a young age. Well, 5 years later my little sister got going in it and i couldn't just let her do it so i joined. I was hooked my first class. Since then i jsut kept going back. psychospaz
6th kyu shotokan (green belt), but then that's pre-shodan, so it's not really all that important. Not that being a shodan would be important, but it would be somewhat semi-relevant here... I'll spar most anyone though.
