Nick117 Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 I *may* not be able to practice Aikido because my father said the school is too far. However, I think something is better than nothing so I looked for other arts in my area and found a "Karate" school close to me but they don't have a web site. So, I'm going to call them and ask a few questions. Their name is "Japan Karate Assoc Of NJ." So of course, my first question is going to be "What style(s) of Karate are taught?" What else should I ask? I don't know much about Karate. I would prefer a more traditional school so would "Are you a traditional or modern karate school?" be proper to ask or will the style clue me in? Thanks. P.S. If anyone knows any good schools in New Jersey (Hamilton area, any style) they would like to recommend to me or direct me to a web site, I'd be very grateful.
karatekid1975 Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 I searched, but nothing came up. I'm from South Jersey originally, but I donno your area. You can PM me your Zip code and I'll search more. If you are in the south Jersey area, I know of a few good schools that you might like. Let me know Laurie F
ninjanurse Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 JKA schools are very traditional and teach Shotokan Karate. It has been many years so I don't know is they include other styles or not. karatekid1975 Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 Nick. I did a search on the zip you PMed me. You are in my old "stomping grounds" You are 15 miles from my old school That is so cool. If you decide to go there, it'll only take about 15 to 20 minutes to get there (it took me a half hour, but it was worth it). Here's the link http://www.imahq.net/East_Coast_Karate.htm The sight is pretty old, because I'm still in one of those pics from 2 and a half years ago LOL. But you can ask me or call there for more info. It might be too far for your dad, but it's a good school. Here's my search results for schools closer to you (within 5 miles): http://www.blackbelts.us/wkfwa This is one of the few with a web site. It's a wushu/kung fu school. Academy of Martial Arts Northeast http://www.northeastama.com/directions.php Shin Karate Institute (Tang Soo Do). Ata Black Belt Academy (Tae Kwon Do). Hamilton Martial Arts American Karate Institute Jade Dragon's Karate Institute (Tang Soo Do) Phoenix Academy of Martial Arts (Tang Soo Do) Hassetts Karate Club Everson's Karate & Kickboxing Institute There are a lot more schools near you, but these were the closest ones. You can look these up in your phone book for the numbers. Laurie F
Sorynn Posted September 2, 2003 Posted September 2, 2003 Here is a helpful article on selecting a place to study martial arts. It helped me, when I was looking to restart, and I hope it helps you as well. http://www.usadojo.com/choosingschool.htm
