part of it is because i want to learn everything in my martial art. i don't want to one of them kids who go to a class once a week and say they are masters.

part of it is because i feel like if i don't learn it and pass it on, some day it will be lost. every time i think of things like this it really saddens me.

i'm a chinese guy and my chinese is not brilliant. i can speak it fluently but i cannot read or write it. i'm going to guess that my kids will not be able to read or write it either (unless i force them to go and learn) and whether or not they speak it is also questionable. imagine what their kids will be like...

the same is true with a lot of things, especially martial arts. it is a skill, a thing that has developed over time and we are privilaged to learn them, so we are obliged to learn them well, which includes all of the aspects, be it weapons, meditaion, whatever.

we like to defend our arts in forums like this but what better way to defend it than by making sure we learn as much as we can and pass on the best that we can. we have to make sure that future generations are not learning inferior versions of this thing that we love.

this is why i hate some aspects of the chinese culture. the old "closed door" policies has caused a lot confusion and arguments within a great many styles and i am positive that this has created a lot of opportunites for bad teaching. bad teaching in turn leads to bad martial arts being passed on. how long until our arts turns into nothing more than a dance? how many of our arts are already victims of this?

so why do i learn/train in weapons?

because it is my duty.

thats some deep stuff, i love to here ppl who feel as strongly about it as i do

i hope it kinda explains why i get so annoyed when there are so many fakes and wannabes on forums talking about things that they have no real knowldge of...

i know it shouldn't bother me because i should expect it. but it is kind of insulting to our arts and to our intelligence when some kid who knows nothing makes stupid comments.

i just feel that somehow, even this little thing, the fakes on the internet, all go into dragging martial arts into the dirt.

maybe i'm just too angry. or it could just be my aching shoulders/legs/knuckles/elbows (wallbag again...) making me a bit cranky.

post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are.

so u primarily train in weapons for self defense purpose? may i ask whether you do carry ur weapon with u when u go out or do u use whatever u can get when it comes to a dangerous situation? what weapon do u use for this purpose?

Yes, my normal carry is from 1 to 3 knives and a sidearm; though it's situationally effected and you may manage to catch me unarmed as well.

train with weapons because the badguys are going to use weapons. I train with weapons because I "cheat" in a street fight. I train with weapons because at the end of a day I will go home to my wife and children. I train with weapons because it is smart to train with weapons.

There is no such thing as "cheating" in a street fight. Everything and anything goes, that's survival. :)

Are you cop or do you live in the hood or something?
