im taking isshinryu right now. i plan on taking one striking art (isshinryu) one grappling, wich will likely be a JAPANESE Jujitsu, and one sword art. but for my sword art i want to escape from the orient and go back to me own roots. So i want to learn celtic sword, not tai-chi or samurai or anything kendo-y like that. What schooling if any is available for this, what are the diffrent forms (if there are any) of styles for celtic sword? if irish diferetiates from scottish and british id be espicially intrested in that (for i know the swords differ) espicially irish sword, thats what im really after.

Take a look for a local SCA (Society fo Creative Anacronism) or HACA (Historical Armed Combat Association)... Google should be able to help you find them.

Otherwise, the only European sword training readily available AFAIK are sabre, foil, and epee fencing... Experts in other European combat arts exist.. but they are hard to find sometimes.

this web site is for an organization that specializes in euorpoean medieval martial arts. i'd say they would be your best bet for finding a place that teaches the cletic sword.

wow! sweet stuff, thanks Bdaze, ill check google to, but this is definitly heading for my favorites! lol@JerryLove, took the words right out of my mouth. actually if i look for some recreational society than it shouldnt be that hard to find, there all over. To be honest, im doing it more because im a fantasy writer who focuses on ireland in his world creation more than i am seeking celtic sword for self defence (little unpracticle wouldnt be?)

this ones really sweet to, this is way more information than i hoped to find. its cool the way there actually calling it a martial art and all that, its kinda like 'revenge of the white guys' or something, like there saying 'asians wernt the only ones that could kick &*%$@#'

though still i wonder about that concept, i love it, and i hope and do belive that my heritage had some could fighting method behind it, but we are talking medevial europe. can we trust the same great philosophers that said taking a bath would KILL you?

point very well taken. also combat is a bit more obviously effective or not than medicine. I often wonder if the reason all the good combatarts are so old is because people had a lot of time on there hands then. if they had time in asia they sure as hell had time in ireland. im really excited about this! i want despretly to look for a school a start training but its not that simple. im leaving for navy boot camp in july, then going to A-school for three months. so i wont begin training till im comfrobley in a duty station. the advantage is anything that can make money, espicially schools of abstract learnings like martial arts of all forms and...ummm....pottery, can be found near or on a millitary base, young sailors have no rent and have money to spend, its either gonna be on a hobby or a girl one so they figure 50/50 chance right? hell they might take the martial art to meet the girl, thats what i did. But then theres disadvantages, a place to stow my weapon if i cant afford rent and im on ships company, the fact that my training will be interupted by 6 month deployments on sea duty ect. in the words of the orcs "were theres a wip, theres a way"
