Kumite988 Posted August 25, 2003 Posted August 25, 2003 Ok, I here everyone talking about 'The Gracies' I dunno, I might sound like an idiot for saying this but...Who are they? I have gotten the idea that they are some family or something that considers themselves masters of Jiu Jitsu but i'm not sure. A little clarification would be appreciated. Thanks.
JohnnyS Posted August 25, 2003 Posted August 25, 2003 The Gracie's are a family from Brazil who created Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (actually they modified pre-WW2 Judo). The man considered to be the true founder of the art, Helio Gracie, was a small man who fought many NHB fights. His sons, Royce, Rickson, Royler, Relson, cousins and nephews have continued in his footsteps. Rorion Gracie was one of the co-creators of the Ultimate Fighting Championship before selling his part in the business after UFC4 or 5. They have revolutionized martial arts in the 1990's by making grappling once again popular and showing that real fighting does not look like movies. monkeygirl Posted August 25, 2003 Posted August 25, 2003 The Gracies are pretty much the Gods of BJJ. I'll move this to the grappling forum so that you can learn more about them 1st dan & Asst. Instructor TKD 2000-2003No matter the tune...if you can rock it, rock it hard.

AUSSIE Posted August 26, 2003 Posted August 26, 2003 Kumite988 if you wanna see the Gracies in action, just watch some of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) videos.
Kumite988 Posted August 27, 2003 Author Posted August 27, 2003 They sound real cool, I'll download some videos of them later tonight. Thanks for the info.
Scorcho Posted August 27, 2003 Posted August 27, 2003 The really cool thing about the Gracie's is that they proved that with style and leverage, you can overcome a bigger, stronger opponent. Royce Gracie, famous from his vale tudo and UFC fights, is 6 foot, 170 pounds (about) and beat huge guys like Kimo Leopoldo. It is no surprise that Bob Sapp can beat Kimo, but that is because Sapp is even bigger than Kimo. In fact, that would be an interesting fight, Kimo v. Royce, though it won't happen, since Royce hasn't fought since about UFC 4 or 5. "The true master avoids the fight."Shodan - Uechi-Ryu KarateBrown Belt - Zen Budo Ryu JJ, Yoshinkan Aikido
Kumite988 Posted August 30, 2003 Author Posted August 30, 2003 On sherdog.com they seem to think Royce might be coming back to the UFC.
Karateka_latino Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 In fact, that would be an interesting fight, Kimo v. Royce, though it won't happen, since Royce hasn't fought since about UFC 4 or 5. Kimo and Royce already fought in UFC 3. Royce won in a hard battle.
