Black Dragon Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 Just Curious, could someone tell me what goes on at a BJJ belt test. For example it TKD. We begin with Katas, then 1 steps, basic strikes and blocks, sparring, and/or Breaking. How are BJJ's test formatted? So recognize or be hospitalized Cuz literally on a scale from one to ten I'm 25.
matt jiujitsufighter Posted August 23, 2003 Posted August 23, 2003 well i have been studying bjj for a year now and its more of a progressive thing. like you just need to show that you can keep up with the people of the rank above you and than your given their rank. i was getting as good as the blue belts so they gave me a blue belt. a little boxing, a little wrestling, a little muay thai, and a lot of jiujitsu( brazilian)
btroadman Posted August 23, 2003 Posted August 23, 2003 Some places give you belts by entering competitions. But basically if you can hang with the upper belts, you will be considered for promotion. BJJ - Blue BeltTaeKwonDo - Brown BeltKrav MagaKickboxing
JohnnyS Posted August 24, 2003 Posted August 24, 2003 Where I train we sometimes do tests for people, especially for blue belt - so that we know that person has a good base knowledge. But all gradings are based on performance - if you are terrible you don't get graded. Usually if someone is constantly beating their peers and doing well against senior belts they will just be given the belt. BJJ has a problem with sandbagging - where people are held back so they can do well in their belt division in competitions. Although this is stupid, it means that you have to be good to get promoted. BJJ is the only art I know of where people generally don't like being graded - you become a bigger target for everyone else in the class BJJ - Black Belt under John Will (Machado)Shootfighting - 3rd Degree Black BeltTKD - Black Belt
Black Dragon Posted August 27, 2003 Author Posted August 27, 2003 So you guys dont have "formal" belt tests, what about you black belt tests, could you explain the format of those? So recognize or be hospitalized Cuz literally on a scale from one to ten I'm 25.
JohnnyS Posted August 27, 2003 Posted August 27, 2003 It depends on the instructor. I was just given my black belt. Everyclass though is a session where you are constantly being tested because everyone is trying to beat you.
