newbalance Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 was going to start sparring tonight, but the instructor has to fit me with gear first, so ill be watching tonight. anways, here is the question. foam or cloth gear? how much should each of them cost? I am getting cloth pads for about $55 total...fill me in here, thanks.
Sens55 Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 If you're just starting out and you're not sure you're going to stick with it, the cloth is definately cheaper. I still like them better for my shins & instep. But, if you plan on sticking with it, foam is better in the long run. Prices can range tremendously, but $55 for a set isn't too bad. A good set of foam will cost much more.
White_Tiger Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 If you think you are going to stay with it...get foam. Foam is probably double the price, but if you ever want to compete you will probably have to wear foam. My personal opinion...foam protects you and the other students better also.
newbalance Posted August 22, 2003 Author Posted August 22, 2003 I havent gone over rules with my instructor about sparring, since I havent started doing it yet, so let me ask a couple more questions. Are head shots ever allowed? fist or kicks? What constitutes a point? a clean kick to the chest pad? punch to the chest pad? thanks
battousai16 Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 i think that depends entirely on the rules of your school "I hear you can kill 200 men and play a mean six string at the same time..."-Six String Samurai
IAMA_chick Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 i use both. i used cloth in the begining and now i use foam now mostly. but definately check with the rules of your school. also, what all are you getting for 55$ Tae Kwon Do15-years oldpurple--belt

There are many sets of rules and it depends on the style, federation and even club so we could help just a bit. Anyway, since you are new to sparring your instructor would be near to tell you if you are doing OK, and what techniques to land My advice. Try not to kill anybody and be relaxed. Look at the whole thing like a game or something similar. Trust your reflexes, be attentive, try to block and move but also to land some techniques. You'll enjoy it. World Shotokan Karate
