Sasori_Te Posted August 17, 2003 Posted August 17, 2003 I want to discuss all of the rave for full contact sport fighting. I've seen many of these fighters on television and in magazines touting their amazing fighting ability against anyone. This is presumtion and arrogance on a cosmic scale. I've fought in 4 full contact matches. I won 3 and lost 1. It didn't matter to me either way because guess what? It's not real. It's not a life and death situation and there are still rules for conduct and etiquette. I don't recall ever having been in a street fight that had any rules. And I'm ashamed to say I've had several of those in my younger days. I would also like to make note that most full contact sport fights will not include any pressure point stylists on the card. All martial arts and sports have some merits but I think we need a little perspective here. A block is a strike is a lock is a throw.
Guest Posted August 20, 2003 Posted August 20, 2003 There has to be rules of etiquette in any contact sport. Otherwise, we wouldn't have many atheletes left. I do not claim that sport fighters would be unstoppable in street combat, but they are trained the in the same arts that non-"professional" martial artists are. Tae Kwon Do has seen me through many of my own street fights, and it is a sport martial art. A martial artist is a martial artist, regardless of the medium in which they practice the art.
Tibby Posted August 20, 2003 Posted August 20, 2003 It is just a sport. Why do some Martial Artist get so freaked out over it? Why don't you complain about Freestyle Wrestling and Kick Boxing while you are at it!? They are even less realitic then MMA, and they act like they are all bad, too! Why don't you attact them?
aznkarateboi Posted August 20, 2003 Posted August 20, 2003 Because people don't think that syles that work in those competitions are ultimate, and that traditional ones suck.
TJS Posted August 20, 2003 Posted August 20, 2003 umm...no one has ever said sport fight are real...who are you arguing against? What people say is those skills transition very well into a real fight with propper training. If you want to talk about pressure point fighting go watch UFC 7 and see one of Dillmans top students, Ryan parker get Choked out by Remco Pardoel in the first round.
battousai16 Posted August 20, 2003 Posted August 20, 2003 "traditional ones suck." ...uh, were you gonna elaborate on that, or... "I hear you can kill 200 men and play a mean six string at the same time..."-Six String Samurai
Tibby Posted August 20, 2003 Posted August 20, 2003 "traditional ones suck." ...uh, were you gonna elaborate on that, or... what's to elaorate? Read his post again, I think you misunderstood him.
Karateka_latino Posted August 20, 2003 Posted August 20, 2003 Both have there place in the Martial Arts world. If you do traditional martial arts and you include full contact in your training, you'll learn many things that a pasive martial arts lesson won't teach you.
Warp Spider Posted August 20, 2003 Posted August 20, 2003 I'd agree, the UFC gives the impression that it's so real that whatever style comes out on top is obviously the best art ever, which I don't think is very accurate. The irony is that although they claim to have the best fighters in the world, the best (or even close in most cases) won't fight in those competitions because they pay isn't all that good. Where is Paul Wight in the UFC? You know, the 7'2" 500 pound guy who can lift a 300 pound guy by the neck and throw him WITH ONE HAND? How well would BJJ work against a guy like that? Ultimate indeed. Paladin - A holy beat down in the name of God!
