Does anybody think it would be a good idea to make up quizzes and tests. Just like in school to see how well they are doing? And does anybody do this already? If so does it work well?

we get tested on our terminology every belt test and our instructor asks us ?s about our forms and things, but we don't take actual tests. and from my view point it isn't going to go over well with kids. who want to take another quiz and test?

Our school has verbal tests during testings as well. I know I don't want to sit down to a written test, and I agree with the last post that kids don't want to either.

I require Black belts to write a 5+ page essay on a martial arts topic, usually relating to the importance and meaning of the black belt. I don't have colored belts do any written work, but there are memorization requirements, i.e. class rules, tenets of martial arts, meanings of terminology, that are demonstrated with their test.

I like the sound of that. However, what concessions do you make for those who's literary abilities are not up to par with their martial art's?

our blackbelts also have to write an essay on what it means to be a blackbelt before their test. and also know the tenants of tae kwon do, what the colors of the korean flag mean, and the colors in the chung do kwan patch.

Our dojo has the physical test then the written test. We teach the physical as well as the mental.

Valithor-All I require is that the candidate (for black belt) show that they have put thought and research into it. I also want to see what personal changes they have made during their training. As far as not being up to par, well, no one has failed this part of the test, and as long as they give it a good effort, no one will. I see it as more of a tool of reflection and self examination, not ability to regurgitate facts or assemble breathtaking new theories on martial arts.

at my school there is a verbal test at every belt test and once you get to higher levels you have to take written tests on terminology, the history of the style, the seven principles of training, all kinds of stuff. to get a black sash there's a massive written test accompanied by essays and i believe even 2 poems.
