YoungGrasshopper
Haha ok I know this is probably like the 7673724 time this has been questioned in this forum, but I need to know where I can find an OPEN STYLE tournament, where someone like me would be obligated or recommended to participate, I am: 14 male Anaheim, California 115lb Currently not attending any dojo. The reason I'm asking this is because all the tournaments I have searched for end up being "you must be over 18 to participate" or something. And I'm pretty sure ppl here under the age of 18 are competing in tournaments. And if anybody does, help me out. I really need to start gaining experience in actual sparring. I'm looking for the least rules (ie. NOT TKD[no punching face ]), open style, and as long as I'm not ending up fighting people 8 years older then me it's ok. I prefer it's organized by "weight division" or "age" , not by "ranking" (which there shouldn't be cause it's open-style right?). I live in Anaheim so Los Angeles can be an acception. And I don't expect anyone to hardcore search for me, I know I'm asking a lot. So if someone could just let me know on how YOU find tournaments for yourself. Warp Spider
I think they usually have that stipulation because "open style" tournaments have a lot more potential for you coming to serious harm. White_Tiger
I am afraid it will be tough to find a low or no rules tournament for your age. You may have to fight organized tournaments until you are 18, but you will be gaining experience while doing so. Try the Amateur Athletic Union, or you could always pick a fight with someone...no rules there!
White_Tiger
Of course, I was kidding about the fight!!!
KwicKixJ1
depends on what circuit you're wanting to compete in. if you're looking for open tournaments that allow for tricks & other non-traditional motions during forms, and features musical/creative/traditional korean/japanese, point fighting, self defense, continuous fighting... etc. go to any dojo and ask them if they know of any local/state circuits that hold tournaments like the ones you're looking for. you live in california... and that state is THE place to be for open style. lots of GREAT competitors come from your neck of the woods. check out info on the west coast team, and you should find tournament info somewhere along the way. and btw. if you're afraid of getting hit in the face... i'm assuming you're not EXTREMELY high ranking. and because of that, i highly doubt you'll find an open tournament that will allow lower ranking participants to make face contact. hope that helped. When did I mention that I was afraid of getting hit in the face? You must be mistaken when I meant "I don't want a tkd tournament because they DON'T allow punching the face"....which is a shame.
