wrestlingkaratechamp
Because if you think about it 100s of years ago someone began MAs. They trained themselves.
Tibby
When I was getting into karate, I went to ask one of the guys in school about it. Everyone in school knows he knew Karate, and anyone who saw him fight would beleive it. I got to talking to him, asked his waht school he went to, he said no school, I asked him what kind of books or video's did he learn from, and he said none. Trail and Error teugh him to fight. I wouldn't have called it Karate, but he was one tough fighter. Yes, it is possable to learn basic fighting that way, but WHY would you when we already have 1000s of years worth of fighting knowledge for 40 bucks a month! G95champ
At some point in history someone did. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
Karateka_latino
Trial and Error, Yes its posible. But also, you may add that your friend may be a natural fighter. The Trial and Error system takes a lot of time to figure out the right way. It can take you, by trial error, Months to get a technique correctly. Months and lots of broken noses and other injuries. sansoouser
I taught myself to fight at first, and I could beat all the guys I faced, ya I took hits trying them out but then I would get mad and unleash a fury on them. But yes I did teach myself, mostly boxing punches and defense manuvers, and the basic low kicks to the groin and knees or shins. The only good thing about it is getting to try your stuff first hand and not slow motion to a willing opponent, but it's not safe to go out and fight, so unless you got nothing to lose then don't do it. Fighting isn't a game, it's you trying to beat down your opponent, and the way I see it is be taken or take them. I guess I am a natural fighter to though, most people say I am anyway. The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain. delta1
Could it be possible to teach yourself your own MA? What to do in certain possitions and how to block it this attack occurs. Eventually you might become good? right?...Because if you think about it 100s of years ago someone began MAs. They trained themselves. In our culture, Cain would have been the first martial artist. He taught himself, then slew Able, but Able didn't know anything. Today, your opponent is liable to be a little more sophisticated. I started out trying to teach myself. It doesn't work. You need an experienced instructor to correct you and to explain the principles of what you are doing. There are a lot of fine points that make or break a technique. Also, systems are structured so that you progress in a logical manner, learning new skills as your base expands and improves. I'd say go find competent instruction in a style that suits you. If you can't find what you want, take something else until your situation changes. Freedom isn't free!
Stold
It's completely possible to teach yourself how to "fight." Just experiment on a bag until you find the moves that feel the most "natural." Could take a while. Contrary to popular belief, it IS possible to teach yourself styles through learning tapes and books. But like all training you need to practice and spar with dedication if you want fighting skill.
Tal
i don't think the great traditional MAs were created by someone entirely on their own. most likely it would have been a group of like minded people who developed it together, probably over more than one generation. how do you know that your techniques are going to be effective if you've never tried them on someone before? how can you be sure that you've covered everything? i think you have to be very, very good to create an effective MA on your own. if you have people developing it with you, it would be a lot easier. two people can create a far better MA than one, and if you can get more than two people it will be even better. shotokan karate nidanjujitsu shodankendo shodan
