Treebranch Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 What Style of MA do you do? What Type of MA do you do? What Kind of MA do you do? What School of MA do you study? Style just sounds too superficial to me, what do you guys think about this? Treebranch Posted August 6, 2003 Author Posted August 6, 2003 I get out plenty thank you very much. The mirror tells us more than what we look like. "It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience.""Lock em out or Knock em out"
Tibby Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 Dude, for real, I think style is a prefect way to describe it. A Style, is a way of doing things. I think is fits. Wither the styles used those name in the past, it isn’t the issue. NOW, right now, different Martial Arts version do things differently. I think style is the perfect way to describe it. It would get confusing, if we all said “Martial Arts” because different arts have different things.
Treebranch Posted August 6, 2003 Author Posted August 6, 2003 The word Style seems so superficial and there is much more to Martial Arts than just style. I think what Method of Martial Arts do you do is much better. I know I'm being somewhat frivilous here, but it just sounds weird to me. sansoouser Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 hmmm You could say I do Judo style and San Soo style, but I wouldn't say I fight with a San Soo style, I fight more like JKD even though I've never studied it. I adapt what I like then use it. I don't do a o soto gari for a win, I did a throw. It doesn't matter what technique you used, you can find out after you won. The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain.
White_Tiger Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 I guess you could plug in any word you wanted instead of style. "What Method of MA", "What Form of MA", but you have to realize the arts are different. You could tell someone "I do martial arts", but you really haven't told them anything. It would be like you told someone "I play sports"...well, what do you play football, baseball, basketball?? So, by telling them what "style" you are simply defining which art you study.
sansoouser Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 well saying you do baseball or football is different, because they are different sports but ma's are all ma's just using your body in a different way instead of a whole new set of equipment. I think what Method of Martial Arts do you do is much better. Some would say the system I study is Kenpo. It becomes a style when I personalize it, as in my 'style' of fighting. But it's all semantics, we all know what we mean whether you say style or system or the way I get out there and hit him. Freedom isn't free!
