Me and a training partner of mine have sparred many times and know each others moves pretty well. Knowing this he has started to only fight defensively only throwing a sidekick in defense no matter what the attack. Ive tried blocking or (taking the kick) and try to get inside but he just moves back and keeps throwing. Sometimes I wish I could sweep him but that is against the rules. Any ideas? He has developed quite the annoying grin an I intend to wipe it off. :x

Jam him!!! Get him while he starts to chamber the kick before he can release it. When he starts to retreat, pounce on him before the kick gets out. :brow:

You dont have to take it or block it either you could evade and advance foward. When he keeps stepping back he is vulnerable. You move fowards at a quicker rate than an opponent can move backwards.

You could be a little less agressive and do the same to him when he attacks.

I have no doubt you will figure him out. Work on it..... :D

shift to his back with a knife hand or down block and counter to his back.

jump over and then get him in the chest, it should catch him off gaurd and also give you a bigger target.

Wait for it, move in to the right or left of the kick, grab the leg and keeping walking straight into him.

Grab his leg and grin back. When he says it's against the rules, ask him if it's against the rules in real life.

And if he cops out behind, 'it'd be different in real life; you wouldn't have caught my kick,' invite him outside to spar there.

If he just keeps backing away from you, the fight will be pretty easy 8)

Start doing a fake little "check" where you fake advancing into him so that he reacts. If you keep doing that, he might get a little paranoid about backing up. With any luck, he might even stop backing up! Even if he doesn't, he'll have a harder time of knowing when you're actually attacking, and when you're checking.

The only way a fake will work though, is if you set it up first. So, block his kicks a few times, let him think that this will go the same way your other recent matches have gone...let him think he has the upper hand. After about three or four times of blocking his kick, FAKE the block, let his body react, and take advantage of the situation.

I don't really have an idea of what you could counter with since I've never fought this person, but I'm sure you'll know what to do ;)

Good luck!

Fight straight with round. Counter with a kick that has more reach like a roundkick or wheelkick. Or circle left or right and counter. May take some drill work to get the timing right but can be to your advantage :brow: .

When none of this works just block it a few times with your elbow and it won't snap out as fast. LOL

If your fighting from a closed stance, when he kicks move your lead leg half way back sweep his leg with your front hand so his back is almost facing you then you could use a reg hand to the side of his face, I've saw this technique used as a counter in TAGB tournaments, very effective, it also works on annoying mutiple kickers. Just watch out for the back kick if you try this
