I like board breaking techniques to train for "finishing strikes". After you take someone down for example, board breaking hammerfist to the side of the neck...that is going to hurt in the morning!!

i like real wood boards even though they are expensive. the rebreakable ones wear dowm in a month or less with constant use. also, the rebreakable boards are very difficult for young children becasue we have some kids who are only 5. i ldefinetly would go with the wood boards.

At our school we do very little breaking. Mostly just a step cross side kick into a single board for tests. We only break from 3rd Gup up. Adults get verying sizes, I usually do the 12 inch square job. And the kids usually do just a strip. Btw, how do I know whether im breaking with or against the grain? When I look that where I broke my last one it was several layers. Does that mean it was with or against?

If the wood grain is // to your foot (imagine a line from your heel to your toes) then it's with the grain. If the imaginary line thru your foot is perpendicular to the wood grain, then you're going against it.

Rebreakable are okay for practise but real wood is way better. We only use real wood for testing. :)

in regards to 'isnt sparring more valueable than breaking." Is kata more valueable than sparring? You can't comapre those two. There two different aspects of training. Breaking is power and focus and really, its math. Sparring is speed, strategy, courage under fire.

There is a huge stigma with re-breakable boards. In my experience re-breakable boards are viewed as the easy way out. I've never used them myself, maybe because of the stigma. And as we all know, they warp and become weak. I recommend no one uses them. :brow:
