sansoouser
why is it that it takes years of martial arts to be good with them, but the special forces can train you to kill someone in a few weeks? The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain. Seanbomber
Because they teach you pure self defence, in the martial arts they teach you that and how to improve yourself.( it also differs from style to style) Death Defying Training is ment to take you to the limit and the verge of death, and then next time to go over that limit. Keep training and i hope we get to spar sumtime!
ZR440
The military only has a certain amount of time to teach you how to take care of yourself. It's happy hour somewhere in the world.
Tombstone
In the military, you live and breath training. As a citizen, you train a few hours a week.
Warp Spider
Special forces get to use guns. That makes it much easier. Paladin - A holy beat down in the name of God!
JerryLove
Several answers I agree with. One is that the number of hours is more critical than the number of weeks. Millitary PT is 16+ hours a day and done very rigorously... Typical MA training is a couple hours a week and not very rigorous. Also, as mentioned, the focus is different. Our "self defense" cirriculum is 12 months (less if you put in the effort)... while one combatively improves through further training; 12 months is really the bulk of it... Given someone who wanted to put in the time and effort (IOW study all day), I'm sure that could be cut down by at least an order of magnatude. https://www.clearsilat.com
Tibby
I’ve wondered that myself. Why is it Jarheads can learn the throw after a 11 week boot camp, and I can’t get a basic Hip throw or a forward roll work good after a month of class?! I think it is training time, they spend more time training. The average martial arts class is only 4-6 hours a week, not counting extra time. Warp- I don't follow you... Drunken Monkey
well, being taught a martial art and being trained to kill are two very different things. i can teach you how to kill someone in about fifteen seconds but it will me a lifetime to teach you kung fu. post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite." Tibby
Yeah, I asked someone about that tonight ,and that is what they said. They only learn a few moves. Just enough for self defense, not the tons and tons of stuff we learn in Martial Arts class.
G95champ
Same reason MT turns out better fighters sooner. Because that is the focus. I can take Yoga but if I work on the strikes involved in it for 2 weeks you will be an effective fighter. Its all about what you focus on. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
