I would go with three lengths of stick:

knife, escrima and bo staff.

That way if you have a bottle, mid-size stick/branch, or a broomstick (respectively), you're prepared :)

Definitely a bo. Even if there isn't a stick around, there's always the guy's arm/leg/torso that works just as well.

The only two things that stand between an effective art and one that isn't are a tradition to draw knowledge from and the mind to practice it.

For readily available and effectively improvised techniques that work with a wide variety of weapons:

Number one has to be sticks. But tommarker and JerryLove have a good point about flexable weapons, and they'd probably be a close second.

I would use a cane,...for a couple of reasons

1) you can use the hook part to hook and sweep your opponent

2) there are tones of take downs using pressure points and weak spots

3) It's an everyday item that nobody would suspect to be a weapon.

4) theres lots more applications too

I would have to say stick techniques using various sizes. Bo, jo, escrima.....etc... I would say cane also except that the original post was speaking of weapons that could be improvised. I'm not sure how you could improvise a cane unless you had an umbrella handy.
