mouko_yamamoto
I want to learn a style for self defence, but i just don't know what style to go with. I like JKD, but it is hard to learn by yourself, and there aren't any schools anywhere around here. I like, JKD, but also, I've got noone to spar with. I can't realy tell how well my skills are in one area, and where else I need to improve in. Any suggestions on which style you think is best in a common street fight? Tibby
I personally think you need to be well rounded. Take Karate or Boxing or Kick boxing and learn the striker properly, and take Jui Jitsu, to ground work in, and to leanr the dirty tricks, like chokes If your a big guy, you might do better focusing on Striking, and doing a little grappling so you can handle going to the ground. If your a little guy, try to opposite. The idea Behind JKD was that every has there own style, not all style works the same for the same people. Find what works best for you, and focus on that. mouko_yamamoto
thanks tibby. I would, but there aren't many schools close. telsun
thanks tibby. I would, but there aren't many schools close. With all due respect we could all suggest arts and styles that we think may suit your criteria but it would probably be more beneficial if you tell us what clubs are near to you. All martial arts have something to offer on the street. Alot depends upon your mental attitude and the instruction that you receive. I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"

mouko_yamamoto
I looked around the net and the phone book, and here is what I got: Kung Fu (not verified yet) Karate Jiu Jitsu Tae Kwan Do/Hap Ki Do Kyuki-Do so, which do you think would be a good mix of striking AND grappling, and be good for self defense? ValeTudo
I looked around the net and the phone book, That might be the first mistake! A lot of phone book places are McDojos... If you have any friends that would know.. ask around for quality places to train. Or, go to websites and ask about good training spots in your area. What is your area by the way? What type of Jiu Jitsu is it? Traditional or Brazilian? If it's Brazilian, I'd suggest it over the others you mentioned. Or, did you check for boxing gyms? I'd suggest looking at boxing as well. mouko_yamamoto
The jiu jitsu is brazilian. And there is also krav maga near me. Warp Spider
Most people would probrably say Krav Maga is the best for self defense. However, I would say that any style of knife fighting is probrably better than any unarmed art, if the law permits you to carry a knife where you live. Generally speaking a skilled knife user is more effective than even the best unarmed fighters, though admittedly there aren't many schools that teach knife fighting. Practice with some friends using magic markers. Then you can easily tell when you've been hit. You also need to practice both versus other "knives" and versus unarmed persons, and try some disarms, in case someone tries to disarm you. Paladin - A holy beat down in the name of God!
