dingyuan
I was watching Best of the Best 1 last night and I believe Phillip Rhee's (asian fighter for american team) martial art is Tae Kwon Do, and he does look pretty competent at it, I wouldn't like to face him in real life. He seems to know more than kicks also, as you see him make a few grappling moves. On another point, one of the senior students at the Wing Chun dojo I used to practice in once told me that he hated to spar against Tae Kwon Do experts because those powerful kicks could be devestating if one landed. I was surprised when he said this to me because I, like many others it seems, don't (or didn't) consider Tae Kwon Do a very street oriented martial art. However, under the hands of a real expert, who has not only trained the kicking aspect of Tae Kwon Do, I can very well imagine this style as being effective. Definitely, TKD is a great style but it is really hard today to find an instructor who doesn't focus on Oympic style sparring training, sadly TKD style is always pick on for this reason we got some Tang Soo Do guys picking on TKD because they think that TKD has turned it's back on the true meaning of Martial art. Naw, we are mostly picking on the NHB guys now for spouting off at the mouth about how they have "discovered something new" and "innovative," in the last few years, all after 10,000 years of systematic development of "traditional" martial arts... Most of us in Tang Soo Do have realized that the majority of TKD practitioners have more in common with us than a lot of the made up stuff you see spouting up in the strip malls. The big arguments are mostly over, since they were about 35-40 years old anyway... Master Jason Powlette5th Dan, Tang Soo Do--Tang Soo!!!
