people to not only bas TKD but shotokan as well, at least sometimes. two of the most famous styles in the world with the most practioners (after judo, perhaps).

this should've been posted in "General Martial Arts" so more people can take part and can be convinced than TKD is not so bad after all :P

why do people bash TKD that much and very few other arts? this thread is for all the people who do TKD or know about it, so they can tell us what they love about it and what its advantages over other styles are!

Maybe you should edit the title, as to not promote any more than already occurs.

your right that did help. my instuctor said that one division was better at fighting than the olympic style is.that the olympic style is all about points or how beautiful the kicks look to the fans. but i don't think he should have said that because it was two people from that stlye that where in class.they didn't like that.

My take on the popularity in bashing TKD is that it was introduced to the world with marketability as the main goal and creating a name for Korea. Money can ruin any good thing when it comes right down to it. However, there are schools and instructors with integrity and an interest in preserving the art itself.

The experience training in Chung Do Kwan TKD and then having a visitor from a "chain" type TKD school made it clear to me that I had picked the proper place to train. I concluded the problems and bad reputation stem from schools that are more interested in teaching as many students as possible with little regard to quality or integrity.

The school that I train in does not participate in olympic style sparring because we believe it is not practical to train heavily padded and be unable to rely on these items when you encounter a real fight. So you might say the differences between the styles are that one school of thought looks at it as a sport and the other school a martial art. Either one has its benefits depending on what you are looking for. With that said either one can be negatively affected by commercialism with little emphasis on training students properly.

I trained at a TKD mainstream club a couple of times, just out of interest. It was okay but it promoted the kind of stuff that people like to "bash". The thing is I still picked up a couple of things. People should look for the good in things............

Later I done some training with my friend and his mate, they are both ex army. Apparently they had trained TKD with the Gurhka's and I tell you what it was something else. If people saw what they did as TKD it would not get bashed at all. Or would it..............

I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"

people bash tae kwon do cus they watch it at the olympics and assume the art is all about kicking and loads of flashy crap that won't work in a fight, if only more people would realise that this is only only sport tae kwon do, and not true tae kwon do which also relies heavily on punching.
