Beer-monster Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 This is mostly a question for Goju stylists or anyone who has experience in this. A friend and fellow karateka recently told me that other than tournament fighting, all serious combat in Goju-ryu takes place is Sanchin stance. I have limited experience in this stance, prefering Shizentai, however it strikes me as a very stable stance, but severely limits mobility and being front on to the opponent, presents a larger target. So how does one use it for serious fighting and self defence against a range of attacks, and to perform a variety of attacks (not just blocks and punches)? Can anyone explain it coz I'm baffled. Mind, body and fist. Its all a man truly needs.
telsun Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 This also confuses me and I practice Goju Sanchin is a stable stance but mobile it is not! Like Shotokans zenkutsu dachi it seems to be more of a training aid than a practical stance for fighting. Any idea where your friend got his info, he may have misunderstood or got it from an inexperienced source. I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"
ronryu Posted July 21, 2003 Posted July 21, 2003 I will quote Hanshi Higaonna Morio "only true sanchin is in sanchin kata" Karate is not a sport , it is a way of life .Sandan Motobu ha Shi-to ryu karate Katsu ryu kempo Ryukyu kobudo
