StoneSkin Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 Advantages/Disadvantages of the two. How do each compare? I know there is quite the rivalry between the two arts.
aznkarateboi Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 Muay Thai would dominate in a NHB ring, but Shotokan would handle a self defense situation more efficiently.
G95champ Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 I don't know about the SD comment. I think both would do fine in SD. However your right that Shotokan would give you more escapes, throws, breaks etc. Both are very powerful arts and in the hands of the right person can do well in any event IMO. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
TJS Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 I know there is quite the rivalry between the two arts. not really...
Radok Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 Yeah, your right, Karate would dominate. If you can't laugh at yourself, there's no point. No point in what, you might ask? there's just no point. Many people seem to take Karate to get a Black Belt, rather than getting a Black Belt to learn Karate.
StoneSkin Posted July 19, 2003 Author Posted July 19, 2003 yes there is rivalry, why would Mas Oyama feel it nessisary to defend the honour of karate by fighting Some Thailand kickboxers.
G95champ Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 I really don't know why ANY one would feel it necessary to show their style is better. Thats not what MA is about. No disrespect ment towards Mas Oyama. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
StoneSkin Posted July 19, 2003 Author Posted July 19, 2003 Well it kinda gets into a name calling thing untill someone finally says okay prove it. And lots of peopel try to prove it, and I think those are some very memorable moments. Bruce Lee, Proving the concept of JKD. Mas Oyama, Defending the honor of Karate. The Gracies, UFC. Im not saying anystyle is the best, as in this topic my vote was sit on the fence. In the Defending the Honor of Karate Mas Oyama defeated 2/3 out of the Muay Thai kickboxers. He did not defeat all 3.
Shotokan_Fighter Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 i think shotokan will be more effective in the street, but in the ring MT may have the advantage, id rally like to sparr a MT fighter just to see how they are. "When I fight, I fight with my heart, and soul. My heart, and soul is Shotokan Karate."Shotokan_fighters creed"karate has to come natural in a fight, if you have to think about using karate in a fight, you will loose the fight"3rd kyu brown belt - shotokan karate
G95champ Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 Be carefule what you ask for Shotokan fighter. LOL. First time I played with a MT fighter he introduced me to leg kicks very quickly. LOL. Although I lost I learned a lot. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
