G95champ Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 Yeah it will. If taking ballet makes me more flexable and able to move then it should make me a better fighter. Thats just logic. It may not be the most cost effective way but to say its not useful is just not true. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
AndrewGreen Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 LOL, Ok you win. Anything physical will help, its just a matter of how much help for how much effort. If your primary goal is fighting, I don't think kata are worth it. Andrew Greenhttp://innovativema.ca - All the top martial arts news!
sansoouser Posted July 19, 2003 Author Posted July 19, 2003 well i looked at your profile and you are a martial art instructor so what would you teach your students then? The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain.

sansoouser Posted July 19, 2003 Author Posted July 19, 2003 ...instead of kata if you say it is useless sound a little iffy on teaching The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain.
AndrewGreen Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 Do you think all martial arts involve kata? Andrew Greenhttp://innovativema.ca - All the top martial arts news!
Kirves Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 If you think it won't help you, then it probably won't. You need to know what to do with it and how to do it. If you don't then you'll feel it's useless. And in that case you are right too.
G95champ Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 Mr. Green Im just picking at you over out past conversations over kata. LOL. Glad you seen the light. LOL. No I do agree with you that if you want to fight you need to fight and not do kata. Its an aid not a replacement. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
Karateka_latino Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 Kata can be helpfull only if your teacher knows how to train the proper bunkai, and i mean a deep study of bunkai. There are several stages of bunkai. If your instructor knows all this information, then he can make Katas a tool to help you to train how to fight.
aznkarateboi Posted July 21, 2003 Posted July 21, 2003 Green, forgive me for saying so but you seem a bit biased against Karate. I don't understand why people think Kata is useless for self defense. Each movement in a kata is a self defense technique that can be effectively applied to a situation. Go here: http://www.i-clps.com/karate/lesson22.html for some possible applications for heian shodan, the first shotokan kata. SubmissionFighter, there is no 'proper' bunkai, each school will have different applications for the moves. The true applications that the original makers of karate intended were lost.
