aznkarateboi Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 which one do you prefer? why? what are similarities and differences?
Wado Guy Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 The heavy bag moves. You punch it, it moves. You kick it, it moves. You knee it, it moves. etc etc etc. It moves. That's why I like it
SaiFightsMS Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 I still think the heavy bag is todays equivalent to the makiwara.
Shotokan_Fighter Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 i like them both, but makiwara for my reverse punch, heavy bag for multiple techniques. "When I fight, I fight with my heart, and soul. My heart, and soul is Shotokan Karate."Shotokan_fighters creed"karate has to come natural in a fight, if you have to think about using karate in a fight, you will loose the fight"3rd kyu brown belt - shotokan karate
telsun Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 Each has it's use. I do not prefer one over the other. I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"

StoneSkin Posted July 20, 2003 Posted July 20, 2003 makiwara can be made for cheap a punchign bag can be expensive
Valithor Posted July 21, 2003 Posted July 21, 2003 Both are very good for their intended purpose, but I guess the bag is more versatile.. Keep Smiling!
shotochem Posted July 21, 2003 Posted July 21, 2003 When I first startred training I used a makiwara. The whole asian mystique thing. As I started getting stronger and hit harder it became more and more painful to hit it so I switched to a heavy bag. I just anchor the bottom and attach a bungee cord so it does not swing as much. My wrist and hands feel a lot better and I certainly have not lost any power in the process. Pain is only temporary, the memory of that pain lasts a lifetime.
