sunchaser Posted July 17, 2003 Posted July 17, 2003 Hello Everyone I'm new to the arts. . .haven't even taken my first class yet and Judo is one of the styles I'm considering. I've done some research on the web and seen a lot written about judo chokes and being choked out. Is it true as I've read that most experienced judoka have at one time or another been choked unconscious? I know that you can tap out before going unconscious but if it is possible to choke someone unconscious in less than 10 seconds is it common to be choked out because it can happen so quickly even if your intention is to tap out? Have most people here been choked unconscious at one time or another? Also is this something I should be worried about happening or should I just accept it as a foregone conclusion? I'm not necissarily worried about it from a safety point more from a point of being embarassed if it happens to me. Is it something that I should be embarassed about or does it happen to everyone? Thanks Jill
sansoouser Posted July 17, 2003 Posted July 17, 2003 well, if you are fighting hard you can be choked out in about 2-5 seconds if you were relaxed maybe about 10 or so. For most people it's like going into a train tunnel, the sides of your vision start to come in when you are being choked and you don't want it to go black or your out. So when I start getting choked off come the gloves and bam I just use everything I got and get them off of me into an armbar or choke them out. The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain.
sansoouser Posted July 17, 2003 Posted July 17, 2003 but more in answer, no it's not scary it doesn't hurt. The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain.
JohnnyS Posted July 17, 2003 Posted July 17, 2003 I've been choked unconscious - I asked my BJJ instructor to do it to me when I first started training so I would know what it felt like. It's actually quite pleasant. You go to sleep, have a very vivid dream and wake up not knowing where you are, how you got there, who anyone else is. This only lasts for about a minute. I've been doing BJJ for 12 years and apart from the one time I asked to be choked I've never gone unconscious in training or competition. At the most I've seen stars and felt woozy. Sho-ju Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 You feel warm and fuzzy...and sometimes you don't even know the chokes on until you wake up from it.
StoneSkin Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 Ive never been choked out but have came very close, I dont think its very pleasent, I have never been knocked unconious either.. and frankly I dont want to be. Its is possible to get choked out in less then 10 seconds could happen in 2 or 3, as soon as someone applies a choke on you and you can feel it relax dont fight it and tap out.
Kirves Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 as soon as someone applies a choke on you and you can feel it relax dont fight it and tap out. So, you don't want to learn any counters to a choke? Someone applies a choke hold on you and you immediately give up? What's the point then? Do you recommend this for self defence too or only for tournaments?
StoneSkin Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 IF soemone properly exectues a rear naked choke, good luck getting out of it, some chokes you can get out of but thats usually befor the choke has been executed, or it hasnt been properly executed. In a street fight if someone gets you in a properly executed choke you dont really have a choice then if you go unconious or not. If a choke is properly exectued your done.
Kirves Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 How do you know he did it properly? He may have a weakness somewhere if you look for it. Most muggers on the street aren't exactly bjj-chokehold experts...
StoneSkin Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 you can deffinately feel when someone has applied it properly there is quite a differnce. Thats why you train counters, because they are possible if the technique is not properly exectued.
