Shorin Ryuu Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 The sai was always a police weapon that was imported from China. Don't let people convince you it was an agricutural tool, as it is one of the few weapons in Okinawa that was not. <===no metal on Okinawa, by the way... The tonfa originated from the handle of a grindstone. One interesting one was the "e", which is a handheld weapon coming from a device that fishermen used to pull in fishnets. There was always some indigenous weapons arts in Okinawa and they were simply developed further when the weapons ban was placed on the Okinawans. Martial Arts Blog:http://bujutsublogger.blogspot.com/

Bl4cKtH0rN Posted August 10, 2003 Posted August 10, 2003 Yeah i knew shotokan did not train with weapons, well ones that i know of here in england. Wondering if any other styles did. Or if karate ever did have weapons at one stageDon't say that in Shotokan doesn't have weapons because in my dojo we with weapons also. "Someday, I'll be the most powerfull jedi ever..."
Martial Artist Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 I study Okinawan Shuri-Ryu Karate. I practice with the Bo, Sai, Nunchaku, Kama, Tonfa, Nagitana and Eku. Additionally, Aikido teaches the Jo and Bokken. I'd go Okinawan if you want weapons... thats where most of the weapons were developed, and the katas are damn effective - little to no flash, just effective movements. Good work out too, especially with the Eku, since its heavier and bulkier than a Bo, and the Sai are great for forearm workouts. kataman Posted September 3, 2003 Posted September 3, 2003 in the begining karate and weapons we teatch togeter cause at some point in history the Japanesses weren't allowed to carry weapons exept for the samourais so the ordinary people had to come with a way to defend them self so were bornd the weapons of karate instrument used on the farm ,the bo is a stick but it was use to carry water normaly the bo would have hook at the end so it can hold the buckets the jo came out of a legend it a part of bo technique and sword technique.we also use kali in our style which is dedicate to karate weapons only.the rest of the weapons were already mentioned.the asian when they brought the martial art to Europe thought we were smart enough to do both so we end up with only the karate part. today weapons are slowly but surely finding there way back to us. I don't train for belt color I train to survive on the street
