submission it would depend on the fighter a boxer or karate guy will stand up and fight but a wrestler guy will probably take you to the ground, a judo guy would proabably just throw or trip you to the ground and maybe go to ground fighting, but if you've ever been thrown on pavement even grass you would not feel like fighting. People break collar bones and arms because they don't know how to land. And all the experts say that if you don't guide them down they could be killed. If you just flipped someone and let go, well if they don't know how to fall out goes their elbow and crack really goes there elbow and arm.

The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain.

I've been in street fights and i have never end on the ground. The clinch, YES all the time, the ground, NO. In fact, i avoid it. I've also see a lot of street fights that doesn't end on the ground. End up on the ground is a posibility, not a set rule.

Well hopefully your opponent ends up on the ground. Just be aware that grapplers want to take you down, so knowing what to do if it ends up there is important. I only had one fight were I was taken down. I turned it around on him after getting hit a few times in the face. They were surface hits nothing that stunned me. I say be ready and prepare for anything, always. If you want to end a fight quickly and you don't want to stand there and trade punches with them, strike, takedown, stomp. Quick and dirty is the way. :)

Thats the way it's done. In a street fight you have to be ruthless and merciless. When your own health is in threat, you have to take action and eliminate the threat quickly, efficiently, and painfully. Don't expect to go far in a real life and death situation with techniques that don't harm the opponent. When an enemy is approacing you, he wants to hurt you, why be merciless to somethin thats shows no mercy. You want to hurt your opponent that comes after your well being. Kick them in the groin, shatter there nose, hyper-extend the elbow, break their leg, mess up there kidneys, crush their wind pipe, stomp on their jaw, gouge their eyes, kick in their tail bone, take out your opponent and make sure that the enemy cannot get up. Make the enemy know that if they decide to come after you again, you'll do the same exact thing over and over. Make him wish that he never messed with you. Dirty fighting is fair fighting in the streets, it's the purest form of self defence.

Just a thought, but isn't one of the points of karate to not get into fights unless you absolutely have to, and then do the least damage neccessary?

You are correct. This is one of the things that Gichin Funakoshi taught his students...to win by never putting yourself in the position to have to fight. This includes never revealing your experience or skill through public contest or boastfulness.

For the most part I agree, but try telling that to your attacker. About public contest, I agree. But when the day comes you'd better know what to do, and do it quickly. :)

I hate when people bash karate, my brother always calls my instructor 'karate man' and says that if he got into a real fight he would have a heart attack and that karate is useless for fighting and stuff

So? You know better, your instructor knows better. Does it really matter what your brother says?
