sansoouser
You know how it is when you tell someone you do martial arts and they start to make fun of you, ya know like oh comon your not gonna karate me or nothing! Well if you take a striking art and if you and your friends start to mess around your not gonna punch him in the nose are you? Or throat strike him? That's one of the reasons i like grappling arts because you can throw them or trip em or pin em or armbar or you know any technique that won't serioulsy injure them unless you want it to. The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain. superfighter
i hear what your sayin, people ask me what would i do if they punched me, and i say well i'll block it and punch or kick you, and they say thats it? and you can't really show them that well because if you went full force they would be dead, whereas with a grappling art you can do a really cool arm lock ot takedown and everyone is well impressed and it also doesn't hurt anyone. Shotokan_Fighter
yeah i know what you mean, iv had one kid come up to me and he was talking a bunch of [edit] about karate, and i hate it when ppl bash karate. I didnt like this kid anyways, but he was like what would you do if i did this, and i was like if you did what? and he swung at me kinda slowly and i steped back rising blocked his punch and planted a reverse punch in his ribs. I did it just powerfull enouph so he could feel what i did and so he knew not to ask me that again. so for ppl who are in karate when someone says somethin accually hit them not in the face and not really hard, just hard enouph so the wont do it again. telsun
"What would you do if I tried to punch you?" "Well if I knew it was coming I would kill you before you had even thrown it. If I don't know it's coming I will probably get hit!" I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"
Treebranch
Also grappling arts are basically more realistic for fighting. Almost every fight ends up in some sort of clinch or on the ground. I like stepping back and striking their forearm or back of their hand with my knuckles. It hurts like hell, but only for a little while. Kyokushin
Just a thought, but isn't one of the points of karate to not get into fights unless you absolutely have to, and then do the least damage neccessary? It seems like a waste of energy just to try and show off to a friend. I hear you about people not understanding, but it's something you just have to deal with. sansoouser
your not showing off, your commenting on a hobby of yours and then they think they can take you or whatever and start to mouth off and do karate actions whatever.. Shotokan_Fighter
im not showing it off, id much rather show them whats up, than having them breathing down your neck about " what would you do if i did this". it does get very annoying. The clinch, YES all the time, the ground, NO. In fact, i avoid it. I've also see a lot of street fights that doesn't end on the ground. End up on the ground is a posibility, not a set rule. Warp Spider
I agree with SubmissionFighter. Some fights will go to the ground, others will not. Sometimes a fight that goes to the ground will go back to standup. There's probrably no worse position for ground fighter to be in if they are still on the ground when a standup fighter gets back on their feet.
