sansoouser
i've been reading your post shoto and I see that you are really one sided, you only like Shotokan Karate, you should see other MA's so you have something to compare to not just saying i love shotokan i love shotokan The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain.
Kirves
Those who say karate is better for conditioning obviously havent tried to roll on the ground for an hour and a half. Wrestling and ground grappling is grueling work. Very very tough.

Kensai
No offence Shotokan, but you obviously know very little about Funakoshi Sensei, that cross trained in numerous arts to create Shotokan. How long have you been doing Shotokan to come out with such a claim to say that your dedicating your life to it. No disrespect, I used to do Shotokan myself, I liked the style. But I used to be of the very one sided approach when it comes to Ki Aikido, however now other styles only enrich my Aikido and never take anything away from it. Kirves
A very famous budo expert Donn F. Draeger once said that if he had to pick either a karateka or a judoka to assist him in a street fight, he'd pick judoka. And he is a man who's been there, done that and seen it all as far as Japanese arts are concerned. (He wrote many revered books on Japanese arts, he was an expert on hoplology, he got very high ranks in judo, karate, jujutsu/bujutsu and so on.) As said earlier, if the fight sticks to punching/kicking range, then karateka has the advantage, if it goes up close, then judoka has the advantage. It is my humble opinion that it is a bit easier to force the range to grappling than it is to force it into staying at striking range.
sansoouser
the thing here in my OPINION is that striking arts rely on muscle where as judo and aikio rely on balance and timing not strength. And like kirves said you can close th gap quickly to grappling range. Dodge just one punch and leap forward and bubby on the ground if they're any good. Now shotokan i didn't tell you to study another art I said you shouldn't be so one sided, saying shotokan is the best ( and yes you imply it ) is wrong but it is not the worst like every art. It's the fighter. The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain.
