bobcatsmw
I'm trying to figure out if I should practice judo or karate. My main reson is self defense, especially for people larger and stronget than I am. I've heard views from both sides. Does Karate also use throws? Kirves
Some karatestyles do throws (either the old Okinawan styles which haven't forgotten the throws, or the modern styles like Wado-ryu which re-introduced them after they had been forgotten). Karate usually uses a lot less throws or joint manipulations compared to judo. Both offer excellent self-defence methods.
bobcatsmw
But if i did both and was at an equal level, which would be more useful if someone tried to overpower me
Kirves
It all depends, if the fight stays in punching and kicking range, karate helps, if it goes to close-quarter grappling or ground, then judo helps more. Best option would be to study both and mix them as needed.
StoneSkin
lets say you practiced karate everyday for a year really really hard. or lets say you practiced judo everyday for a year really really hard. You would be able to defend yourself equally as good in either situation. With Karate youd be good at striking with Judo youd be good at grappling, what do you like to do more strike or grapple? sansoouser
actually it might depend on your body type if you are going for a certain time. If you are stocky and strong then maybe judo but if you are strong and big, but not really scrappy then probably karate. The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain.
Radok
In Traditional Karate, there is a multitude of joint manipulation, A moderate amount of throws, and a lot of striking. The ground fighting is slight and hidden. Judo has very little striking, a lot of ground fighting. A vast amount of throws, and some joint manipulation. If you can't laugh at yourself, there's no point. No point in what, you might ask? there's just no point. Many people seem to take Karate to get a Black Belt, rather than getting a Black Belt to learn Karate. Radok
Karate has a better cardio aspect, so that's better. If you can't laugh at yourself, there's no point. sansoouser
hmmm i would say judo, you do alot of mat work and stand up throws and things and randori which is free fighting without striking and its full force go against someone good and you'll be hooked on oxygen The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power.
