Thank you Kirves for expressing your very educated opinion. Would you say that fighting in general no matter what the style may be can be used for self defense? Therefore it is a MA? Or only fighting arts that originated as Combat MA's?

Yes, but it is historically obvious that karate on Okinawa, toudi that is, was studied purely for self defence purposes.

And it is also true that boxing was used "purely for self defense purposes" prior to it's development as a sport.

You aren't seriously be suggesting that the only true Martial Arts are the ones who have verifiable traceability to actual use on a battlefield of a war, are you? If that is the case then you have a very short list of Martial Arts indeed. Just because boxing does not fit the traditional kicking/meditating/etc. archetype of a martial art does not mean it isn't one. Just because the only way it has been seen by most people is as a sport doesn't mean that is all it is. Judo, TKD and even karate are becoming increasingly sport oriented but still have their roots in self defense, just like boxing.

People Play baseball ,people play soccer.

Nobody plays boxing.

Discounting boxing as a Martial Art doesnt make sense. Art in my opinion is something that is creative something that you can express yourself in. I think Many Karate-Ka would agree with me that when they practice ,it is an expression of themselves and some would even say its more then that. People can also express themselves through boxing, it may be differnt then Karate but on that level they share more things in common then they differ.

Martial Arts is just a name, if you get out of training what you want. i.e. self defence skills, fitness etc. then it really doesnt matter what people call it.

Thats very true. It is self-expression, taking control of your mind and body, and learning to use the techniques you have been show in a way that work best for the individual.

boxing is a martial art. At my martial arts school we learn basic boxing before anything else

After I do a shoto-uke (an elbow lock) or uchi-uke (another elbow lock)

Shoto-uke = Knife Hand Block. not elbow lock.

and

uchi-uke = Inside Block. not elbow lock.

Make sure you realize the origin of the word "uke". The root "uke" (verb is ukeru) means simply to receive. Only in the most basic sense are these techniques blocks, but nowadays in many places "uke" is almost always synonymous with "block." I of course first explain "uke" as meaning block when I introduce people to the basics as well. However, this isn't so much as a "shame on you" post as it is a "here's an interesting tidbit of info" post.
