sansoouser
its a martial sport inmy opinion The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain.
Treebranch
If boxing is not a MA which is O.K. by me if it isn't, than what about Judo? What about Kick boxing? Muay Thai Kick Boxing? Aikido? Karate? Were these really used in combat. If so can anyone tell me what battles were fought using Muay Thai or Aikido. Just curious. Apparently, a variation of Muay Thai used to be used for combat, but I don't know nearly enough to fill you in. But, it isn't the martial part that's in dispute, it's the "art" element. What does boxing or kickboxing or Muay Thai have that qualifies them as an art? Any philisophical views, any traditions as an art, any of the things you would normally associate with an "art" style? Treebranch
I would say clearly that Boxing is an art. That goes for the others I mentioned a well. I say the only way to appreciate art is to study it and try it. It clearly takes alot of discipline and skill. The whole Martial debate would just be agruing symantics. Kirves
Ever seen gangs of New York? Ever seen gangs use baseball bats to beat someone up? Is baseball a martial art?Lots of western arts are over looked, boxing and wrestling are very effective martial arts. You are both right and wrong. Yes they are effective. Yes they are overlooked. But they aren't overlooked in war. They weren't developed for war, but for sport. I think the poll is too limited, we should have other options like 'martial sport' (= sport from a war art) and 'fighting sport' (= sport not from a war) too. wilko9999
like in K1 nobody has say that they do boxing they say Karate and Muay Thai in karate your move flow, in boxing the names of the move are left jab, right jab, lift hook, right hook, but in karate it snap punch, reverse punch, ridge hand, back fist and more plus in most martial arts you block peoples move but in boxing and kick boxing you take the punch and kicks that why i think it is not a martial art. Treebranch
So is Aikido a Martial Art? Judo? Muay Thai, in it's modern form? This is addressed mostly to Kirves, but if you have an opinion by all means express it. StoneSkin
boxing is a martial art. They used to teach boxing to soldiers. Boxing has become a great sport, and has changed quite a bit since the 1600's. At one time there were no rules in boxing, it was basicly no holds barred fighting, looked a lot like kungfu san soo. Boxing also had throws and takedown techniques. Boxers use to dip there hands in sheep urine and alum crystals to toughen up the skin. Boxing became Illegal in the 1800's for a while. As it was too brutal. many countries have outlawed there martial arts practices because they were too brutal at some point in history. Most people will say oh well that was back then boxing is jsut a sport now, the same can be said about Taekwon do, Judo, Kickboxing and many others. Sho-ju
Ever seen gangs use baseball bats to beat someone up? Is baseball a martial art? No need to reply. You are both right and wrong. Yes they are effective. Yes they are overlooked. But they aren't overlooked in war. They weren't developed for war, but for sport. Thanks for your approval. Ya, and the army doesn't have a boxing team or wrestling team? How effective do you really think karate is in war? Keep the funnies coming. I can just see you trying to drop people attacking you with a reverse punch. I think the poll is too limited, we should have other options like 'martial sport' (= sport from a war art) and 'fighting sport' (= sport not from a war) too. Sure a sport side (now) exists in all martial arts, that is why we have karate-DO vs. Karate-jitsu.
