hello,I practice aikido and I yet learned how to offend myself in the dojo. Also, if any body runs at you full tilt with arms out like a ghost in a scoobie du movie I would fall over laughing and trip them up in the process. As far as aikido having no offense or strikes? You must have studied a watered down version as real aiki has strikes in every technique offfered.Peace

Most people don't have the mind for Aikido or the heart. Too much patience is required for the high art of Aikido.

Basically, in Aikido, we use a "Ski" (um i hope i spelled that right), that is, a hand extended and teh other bent next to and behind it. This represents something coming at you - a knife, fist, club... whatever. So in this sense, its pretty much defensive only, but isnt that the point of most martial arts? a means of self defense from one or more attackers?

I just got into Aiki because the college I am at doesn't have a Karate dojo, and I was somewhat surprised at how useful it is. While Aikido does usually assume energy flowing towards you (i.e. an attack), it does often use atemes (strikes) to take the oponent's balance, thus starting a flow of energy.

to answer your question aikido is more deffencive than aggresive (or offencive as u put it lol), my sensei used to train in aikido, he said that if they (high level aikidoka) got hold of him then he would have been finished...but if he didnt attack they would never be able to get hold of him.

basically its exelent for defence but poor for attacking.

Shotokan Karate - brown belt 2nd kyu

Judo - Yellow belt

Jujustu - recently started, white belt
