Warp Spider is correct in saying that it "depends highly on the situation and the environment"

aznkarateboi has given us a broad environment and situation of a guy just attacks you in an alley or in a parking lot. Let’s make it a blind ally only one way in and one way out. It is indeed unfortunate that we live in such a place as most martial artists would avoid walking down alleys, but alas.

As we walk down the ally on this sunny afternoon wearing runners, jeans, tank top/t-shirt we hear foot steps behind us, as we turn we a confronted by a of a man five feet ten inches tall slim build some 5 – 6 feet away from us brandishing a knife.

When you ask the gentleman what he wants he replies “I just bought this hunting knife and thought I would have some fun and stick someone”

Your back is up against the wall and you have less than 3 seconds to react, what do you do and which martial arts you think would help you deal with this situation.

good question john G, kinda a weird scene i dont think much ppl would do that, would they? but to anser your question, I think my art would help me in this situation, dependes on the attack he comes at me with, id avoid it by moving out of his way and run away out were i came in and never stop running until i know its safe lol, but that is one of the best things you can do, id much rather run than take a chance of getting killed.

Shotokan_Fighter,

Same scenario, but unfortunately you didn’t react quick enough so he lunges forward and sticks you in the side once then twice, as you grab the knife with you blood soaked hands, the knife slips from your grip slicing off most of your fingers on you left hand.

What do you do and which martial arts you think would help you deal with this situation?

the think that really ticks me off to no end sometimes is how we all asume our feet have no value in a street fight. since the big wig here seems to be a shotokan fighter, ill talk shotokan for a second. you know how in shotokan youguys love to refer to parts of your body as weapons? and you have like 8 basic ones really? (knees, feet, fist, elbows0 will just because you lost one weapon why are you saying your screwed when theres still 7 more at your disposal! just a thought, but if i had 7 machine guns i wouldnt cry about looseing one, if i was in that situation? use your feet dammit!

Obviously kali/escrima/arnis or Krabi Krabong would be the best art for the situation that John G mentioned, as these are knife-based arts.

How about this situation: Your friend is drunk and starts becoming violent. Which art is the best art now ?

the soul is mightier than muscle. And so is my arm/wrist bar but then again after he has his elbow popping out of his skin and hitting his chest with it if he still feels like fighting let him try and take another slash with his other hand, oh ya thats if he can bend down pick it up and slash at me before i kick it away then kick his face and run like heck hoping he doesn't have a gun

The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain.

My opinions wary from time to time, depending on matters such as who I fought the last time, how much sleep did I get last night, how is the moon aligned to the planet Mars and so on... Edited by Kirves
