"Full contact - fact or fiction ?"

Recommended Posts

I'm sure this will put a cat amongst the pigeons...

But if you have full contact sparring, and people aren't regularly getting badly hurt, are you are doing something wrong ? Perhaps the wrong art ?

What i'm asking is, if you can't use the stuff that really works on the best target areas in your sparring (obviously because people get castrated etc), then why waste time practicing stuff that kinda works ? Surely we should train to use our best and nastiest stuff before anthing else on the street ?

Especially with habitual repetition of attacks to 'safe' areas, are you gonna think to change it when you have to really fight ?

So how relevant is full contact sparring ?

Respect to you all,

It is very relevent because you practice against a real opposing force at real speed. Not just walking thru these movements with lite force resisting you.It is totally different to try a technique at full speed against a real opponet.

It's called using protective equipment...

gloves, headgear, shinpads.. etc.

full contact sparring is very relevant...the best fighters in the world are th ones who train full contact.

Like what? i think I can taget a few inches above the knee with a round in training and terget a few inches lower in a real fight..

Nope, full contact sparring is done without people getting seriously injured.

Those that don't do it tend to overestimate the effects on what they are doing. They also tend to lack the timing to actually land against a resisting opponent.

You should watch the first few UFC's. Full contact, bare knuckle, no rules. They dispelled a lot of the myths about the martial arts.

Didn't see anybody striking the throat, groin or eye-gouging or purposeful bone-breaking? No rules means no rules, full contact is a slightly different matter.

Either you didn't actually watch them, or didn't pay much attention then.

YEA..except everything you mentioned did happen...maybe it also shows it's not so easy to pull off some techniques in a real fight..

Even on the street you adjust your level of response to the level of percieved threat. Sparing with contact is about learning to apply your skills against a resisting opponent who is trying to hurt you, but not seriously. It's about learning to take a hit and keep comeing. It's about learning that just because you got an arm in front of it doesn't necessarily mean it was blocked. It's learning to fight at a higher level of intensity and intent. It's about all that, and a whole lot more. But it is not about seriously hurting or injuring someone.

Freedom isn't free!

learn to take a hit in martial sports then learn to fight in addition to martial sports. Judo is full contact, but there is no punching or striking for that matter.

The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain.

it is possible to gouge out an attackers eyes, kick their testicles until they are ruptured or even fill an attacker with bullets, and have them keep coming at you. Police and bouncers face individuals like this regularly.

However, a Judo choke or right hook will knock this person out. Judo and boxing can also be practiced full contact and full speed. There is a certain injury rate though.
