cross
All depends on the situation but most often it would be feet comfortably wide and hands held up covering face and or chest with one or both hands open or closed... All depends on the situation.
ninjanurse
We teach a totally non offensive posture when confronted. Students are taught to block/counter or strike from this position if need be. It is similar to shizen-very natural, body slightly angled to reduce target area, hands in a non-threatening position at the sides. During sparring we use a boxing style guarding stance hands high, balls of feet, etc. "A Black Belt is only the beginning."Heidi-A student of the artsTae Kwon Do,Shotokan,Ju Jitsu,Modern Arnishttp://the100info.tumblr.com/

cross
And if you hold your hands up in a non agressive manner its quiet easy to close your fists and your in a perfect position to attack the opponent and defend yourself.
fireka
i tried to post in the karate forum about how i was attacked recently by three guys, and got away succesfully, but for some reason the post didnt make it through. it was a long post so i was a little upset and didnt try and right it again. but to be honest, i didnt use any one stance, i played it by ear, i think i went into a side stance when i kicked that one guy (actually it was two, one right behind the other, but whose counting?) in the back.
