I would definately like to be able to translate any skills I learn to any type of clothing. Are there any judoka here who ever practice without gis?

Thanks for the advice guys.

I think I would enjoy both styles, so I'm going to base it on convinience. If there is wrestling at my university, I'll probably do it, otherwise I will make the drive to the closest judo club.

Karate is very linear and you keep your back straight in your kamae. I would not suggest any MA that has you bend over to throw someone. Take Jujitsu or Budo Taijutsu for some viscious throws.

WTF?

Have you ever done JJ? The throws judo uses are taken from JJ and are the focus of judo. They are almost the exact same waza.

Sorry I meant no offense. The next time you get thrown by someone that bends their back, go with it and keep holding on to them. What happens is you will pull them down with you. If you keep your back straight and use good kamae this is less likely to happen. For your info Judo has changed alot since it was taken from Jujitsu. I have a friend from Hawaii that was trained by his father who was trained by a WWII Japanese Judo champ, before the real Judo was banned. That old Judo was brutal and was not a sport yet. That Judo came from Jujitsu. What you see now is not that Judo. So no need for the WTF? Cause you almost really PMO.

Hanging on hardly ever works...when it does you end up on the bottom with a solid judoka working armbar's or chokes. Your not supose to bend your back until the person is in the air, you bend your knees first. This is called kazushi. I can only assume you are thinking about throws that you use when you turn your back to the person....

I have trained both in old school judo and in the new judo. Stand up is the same. Ground work is not.

So your saying that if you go with the throw and you know how to roll out of throws, there's no way out of this stuff, come on. They teach you guys counters to this stuff right. Try the same throws without bending your back, drop your hips down so you don't have to bend. Try it and see what happens. Do it slow cause you might destroy the person your trying it on.
