sansoouser
bruce lee was the most famous, in my opinion. The greatest were the old masters who fought in life or death battles regularly. And some kung fu masters in the triads. The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain. Kirves
Yyeah, a sparring match or a witnessed match in a modern country with laws against wilful killing, are not comparable with something like feudal Japan where people were allowed to kill bystanders for exercise... sansoouser
Mas Oyama was great like you guys said. A man who also changed fighting maybe not martial arts but fighting was Martin " Farmer " Burns. The catch as catch can wrestler. At 175 lbs. traveling with the circus took on just about anybody, he also did a 6 foot hangmans drop while held in the air for 3 minutes whistling. He had a 20 inch neck The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain. Prodigal Son
Miyamoto Musashi is meant to have had over 300 real fights without losing. Geoff Thomson is also meant to have had over 300 real fights without losing. But is there a requirement for a martial ARTIST to have had any real fights at all? For a martial ARTIST, no. For a MARTIAL artist, definitely. Fighting is fighting, and dancing is dancing. And unfortunately there is only one way to learn what works in a fight... >>>PS<<< ------------------------------------------------------------------------Self-defense is only an illusion, a dark cloak beneath which lurks a razor-sharp dagger waiting to be plunged into the first unwary victim. Synaesthesia
Prodigal Son, I agree. That's why I don't totally buy it when martial arts masters preach peace and love. Sorry buddy, but you're a master because you've gotten into fights that you probably could have avoided.
telsun
I think that it would be best to discuss who your favorite martial artists are without the assumption statements (Well, we all know that Patrick O'Keefe is the greatest martial artist ever, etc.). Who is Patrick O'Keefe anyway No disrespect meant I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"

Valithor
Jackie Chan can't kick past the knee? Funny, cause I've got this video with him kicking a guy in the head.. And why isn't Jet Li a real martial artist? How does one upgrade to being real? Aren't my white-belt students martial artists? Or are they just pretending to learn and train? Keep Smiling! sano
ok i forget what movie it was but i remember jackie chan fighting in a casino and every time he did a high jump kick it was a stunt double if you don't belive me rent the movie slow the tape down and you will see and every time he did this weird three hit jump air kick they only show the bottom of his body not his face. and i'm sure the movie your thinking about is when he was young not now and if was now it was front kick thats like the only kick he can perform high now. jet li will become a martial artist when he cuts those ropes and fight like a real human not some dragonball z, yu yu hakusho, or anime reject wannabe. falcon kick!!!
