StoneSkin Posted July 9, 2003 Posted July 9, 2003 How do you guys think a Sumo wrestler would do in a fight?
TJS Posted July 9, 2003 Posted July 9, 2003 How do you guys think a Sumo wrestler would do in a fight? Every Sumo Wrestler that fought in the early UFC's and Pride got owned. Emanuel Yarborogh, Koji Kitao, etc...all got hurt pretty bad by strikes. Sumo has never had succes NHB fighting.
DokterVet Posted July 9, 2003 Posted July 9, 2003 I remember seeing one fight in the early UFCs in which the sumo guy was dominating, and it looked like he was going to flatten his opponent when a stray punch hit his nose and broke it, ending the fight. I think if he had done some conditioning to withstand the blows, he could have done quite well. Also, the sumos were beaten by strikers if I remember correctly. I wonder if a grappler would have been able to do the same. I wouldn't want to have a 400 pound man in my guard. 22 years oldShootwrestlingFormerly Wado-Kai Karate
TJS Posted July 9, 2003 Posted July 9, 2003 yea..everyone always wondered what would have happened in Royce gracie would have met the 600+ lb emanuel yarborogh in the finals... the fight you are thinking of is Koji kitao vs mark hall...mark broke his nose..the sad thing was he only weighed 190 pounds...this was back when all the big guys were fighing.
Tibby Posted July 9, 2003 Posted July 9, 2003 Sumo is a great sport, but it is a sport more then anything. There matches don't lastm ore then a few second, and anytime anything other then your feet touch the clay, it's over, and they can't kick or punch. That is why I think they don't work in the UFC, they have no experance with groundwork, and even if they didn't they are to big to move fast on the ground. Now, in a regular street fight against an untrained foe, I thnk they would own. They are HUGE, and strong, they would man handle the other fighter, with a barroom brawler/longshoreman like style, plus htey have basic takedowns, they can just leg sweep a guy, and jump on him, the 300-400 lbs would increase exponentally when he jumps on you, we are talking over 1000 psi landing on your chest! yeah, against in untrained fighter, or a beginner, the Sumo's would own!
StoneSkin Posted July 10, 2003 Author Posted July 10, 2003 Yeah sumo is a sport but I think would do well in a grappling match like trying to perform any kinds of leg locks or elbow locks would be difficult the guys limbs would be so heavy and you dont got a lot of room to work. Sumo's dont have a lot of strikes but they have that nasty slap!
Tibby Posted July 11, 2003 Posted July 11, 2003 Oh yeah. They slap like hell, and they end up with whelps in there torso at the end! Part of the rules, no close fist hits. Thats no punches, no hammer fists, etc. But they can slap, and slap they do! I have a friend in the Army, he is stationed in Italy, he says over there, there is a law that you can't hit close fisted, so the Italian men get into slap fights... no comment...
StoneSkin Posted July 11, 2003 Author Posted July 11, 2003 Slap fighting... the new age in martial arts. Sumo's are super fat but I wonder how much endurance they actually have. From what ive heard a 400lb sumo is actually in pretty good shape.
Tibby Posted July 11, 2003 Posted July 11, 2003 And they a flexible like you'd never geuss! Those guys are azaming Fighters in their own right.
