telsun Posted July 9, 2003 Posted July 9, 2003 Beer-monster it would appear we have something else in common; I too would also like to train and compete in Kyokushin. I have trained at a Kyokushin club a couple of times and was very impressed, unfortunately though the club is very far away and not practical for me to train at.I have to comment! It depends how you do it really Okay well I have had a little think about this. It would be more accurate for me to say: actually I fight by my rules unless I am requested to do otherwise. I will fight by their rules if I think it is to my advantage. Please allow me to elaborate. If I am going to a karate class that is a different style then I think the difference in our styles should be shown. This will be of benefit to me and my opponent. Like I said though if I did a groin kick and my opponent said we don't do groin kicks then I would refrain from doing them, which brings me neatly onto............. Controlled groin kicks are possible, but they must not be aimed to the groin itself. What we do is kick to the inside of the thigh or to the hem of the jacket. In my 12 years of practicing this way I have never made serious contact with any of my opponents, although I have received one from an inexperianced karateka trying to imitate his seniors. They are dangerous and need to be applied with extreme care. I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"
Beer-monster Posted July 9, 2003 Author Posted July 9, 2003 Yeah I know. There a kyokushin club near me too, but too far. In fact now that I'm home from uni and living in my sleepy little twon I can't formally train at all without spending a small fortune on buses or taxis. The only martial art practised here is Tae Kwon Do, an art which I've done before but wasnt too impressed with, an I'm too deep into two styles already to mess with a third. Besides the club is the eppitome of Mc Dojo. Perhaps I should grab a train to Kent and we could have a spar huh Telsun Mind, body and fist. Its all a man truly needs.
Rich_2k3 Posted July 10, 2003 Posted July 10, 2003 guys i was wandering do u ever find open tournements where a variety of arts compete? "When my enemy contracts I expand and when he expands I contract" - Bruce Lee
telsun Posted July 10, 2003 Posted July 10, 2003 Perhaps I should grab a train to Kent and we could have a spar huh Telsun I think that this may prove to be a dissapointing journey for you Beer-monster There are thousands of guys between here and there that could teach you more than I can. Although you're only a little fella and I maybe able to kick your butt, so maybe you should come down Just kidding, maybe one day if I am up that way or you are down here............ What style of karate are you practicing anyway. Tell me a bit about yourself, if you would be so kind.guys i was wandering do u ever find open tournements where a variety of arts compete?Pick up a copy of Combat, Martial Arts Illustrated or some other mag from the news agent. There are some in there sometimes. I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"
telsun Posted July 10, 2003 Posted July 10, 2003 Don't worry about that last post Beer-monster as I have just read this: http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=79003&highlight=#79003 I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"
Beer-monster Posted July 10, 2003 Author Posted July 10, 2003 I was just kidding, but yeah if I'm ever down there for any length of time give me the address of your dojo and I may pop by. Thousands of people eh. Ah but how to find them? Thats is the question. Mind, body and fist. Its all a man truly needs.
telsun Posted July 11, 2003 Posted July 11, 2003 Well maybe not thousands How to find them? Well you have to look The best instructors are not always the best known and are often hard to find. I do not wish to be patronising but you have searched the web and looked in the phone book haven't you? I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"
Beer-monster Posted July 11, 2003 Author Posted July 11, 2003 Yes, but knowing the location of a dojo doesn't help all that much in finding a good spar? I'm a bit of a shrinking violet (is that too feminine a term) so ringing everyone and saying Hey can I come and spar is hard. Plus how to get a nice free spar, and not a tippy tappy point spar. Something for all ranges too? Also as I've said in another post, transport and money are hard to come by. Overall I think I'm screwed on the budo front for the summer. Mind, body and fist. Its all a man truly needs.
