i dont know much about TKD but i have fought (sparred) against a TKD stylist and he was nothing to me. lol to me TKD is not that good for self defense, its good for show though. i know that if you study TKD for along time you prolbibly will beable to fight really good. you ppl who study TKD can you tell me more about it and how good it would be on the street.

im not trying to bash TKD here im just stating my opionin.

TKD is not only about high kicking and stuff. there are also many strike techniques while emphasis is put on kicks. for self defense the kicks to the head are not recommended. belt-level kicks and such would do better. whether TKD gives u a good self defense depends on ur dojang and on ur instructor.

any art is good for self defense if you can correctly apply it. i'm not absolutely sure of this, there's a bit of political corruption and scandal in my art (hwarang do), but i heard that hwarang do is the parent of tae kwon do. after hwarang do was outlawed (at this point it was supposedly passed down person to person in secret), a more linear and less lethal version was created, hence where tae kwon do comes from. again, i'm really not sure. scandal/corruption thing. my point was to say that one art is just better than the other is kind of pointless. afterall, who are you to judge? by that logic, i, being a hwarang do practitioner, should be able to take you all out, as i have 4,000 moves coming form all sorts of styles in all aspects, from striking to grappling, and 108 weapons at my disposal. however, from what i've read, i don't know that i could take on half if not less of the people here. and for the record, i've defeated both karatekas and tae kwon do practicioners. i guess what i'm really trying to get down to is that it's all about the fighter.

It is funny you started this thread Shotokan_Fighter as I was going to start one similar about shotokan karate. :D

My thinking was actually a little different. I trained in shotokan for a fair few years and also visited many schools, some of the best in the country. However I usually found the style lacking depth and focused very little on practical fighting.

But then I think back again and realise that I am just generalising. I have met and trained with some extremely competant Shotokan karateka and realise that it is much more down to the karateka and sensei than the style practiced. :karate:

I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"

yes i do agree that is up to the karate ka and the sensei, you have to have desire, determination, to me shotokan is the best. i will proove myself, that shotokan is good for self defense, shotokan is good for in ring fighting. people judge shotokan by the statistics,Shotokan dosent have any statistics. If there hasnt been any shotokan karate kas in the K-1 or any other tournements, how would you ppl know if its good or not. To me shotokan karate kas dont need to proove there selves in ring fighting, we care more about what happens on the street. I eat, sleep, and breath shotokan karate as i have said before. I know that if there are shotokan karate kas like me out there, shotokan karate will proove itself that it is that damn good.
