One of the reasons organizations (of any sort) wear uniforms is to promote a sense of identity to the group and uniformity within the group. Everyone in the same uniform is important. Yes there can be some snobbery in some who insistet on wearing expensive name brand gi's. But an outsider looking in does not see the brand patches. All an outsider sees is a unified group of people.

A bit of lore on how whites are kept white in areas without bleach and fancy washers. All chothes are hung up to dry. If the white clothes are not clean looking (if stains and such are still visible) the garment is rewetted and hung back up. As many times as necessary to return to an acceptable state of whiteness.

I used to wonder how places in the world where they wear a lot of white allways looked white not gray or dingy.

Sometimes low tech is good.

White, just plain white with no symbols or anything!

Lol, simply because is symbolises purity, and truth, perfection. Something you are trying to achieve with youre art - perfection or pure expression of technique. It's not extravagant and everyone wears the same one so it helps you feel humble - lose youre ego and pride

And I like the contrast between a white suit and a black belt  hehehe

We do wear patches.

The first patch, the club patch with the Shotokan tiger, is earned. Students are awarded the right to wear a patch. After a students earns the first belt and learns the next kata their dedication is awarded by being presented with a patch in class. This patch is worn on the front left side of the gi, as one parent elequently put it "Over the heart:.

The only other patch is a kobudo patch. The right to wear this patch is also earned. After testing to a sixth kyu level with the second weapon a student is presented this patch with the new grading certificate.

Bagpuss I am sure other schools use a similar pattern of earning patches.

I am, however, still impressed by the dignity displayed in older pictures of the founders of many of the karate styles with their students in plain white gi's.

I included some of my patches in my wall display with my belt rack and certificates.
