RagingNinja Posted July 3, 2003 Posted July 3, 2003 Ok, I'm new here, and to martial arts and have a question regarding training in two styles at once. My question is whether I should train in two styles at once or not. I am not sure whether to train in Tae Kwon Do, or Traditional Karate. One of my friends (who got me into martial arts) is teaching me karate currently. He is good enough to teach, but I was considering to go to a dojo and learn there as well. However, there are no karate dojos close to where I live. There is however Tae Kwon Do. Now my question is, should I train in Tae Kwon Do at a dojo while learning Karate from my friend? Or is this harmful to my training, and just simply pick one? _______________________________________"Do or do not, there is no try"- Yoda
sansoouser Posted July 3, 2003 Posted July 3, 2003 Well if your new it's better to pick one then master it or become good at it then go onto another if you do 2 at a time beginning you won't excel fast in either most likely. The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain.
granmasterchen Posted July 4, 2003 Posted July 4, 2003 as long as your friend is not teaching you katas, i wouldn't worry about it, karate and TKD are similar in their methods both are stand up striking styles, so i would work with my friend, but make sure that he is only teaching you moves and such, no kata yet, and then go to the dojo for TKD That which does not destroy me will only make me stronger
RagingNinja Posted July 4, 2003 Author Posted July 4, 2003 Ok thanks for the advice, I am glad to know I can still do both. It's also a bonus because my friend is very high in Tae Kwon Do as well, and I have another whom I train and practice with who is also red belt in Tae Kwon Do. _______________________________________"Do or do not, there is no try"- Yoda
aznkarateboi Posted July 4, 2003 Posted July 4, 2003 tae kwon do is cool, but i would recommend karate
