telsun
Does your instructor offer alot of praise or just once in a blue moon? Do you like his/her approach or would you rather it was the alternative? Instructors; what is your approach and why? I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"
jmd161
The only praise you'll get from my sifu is "Do It Again" It was hard to get use to at first, but i've come to understand him now.I rather that then what i used to get at other schools. False Praise. Just to keep the payments rolling. jeff The Basics Are The Hidden Secret To Kung Fu Master The Basics.
G95champ
I try and always build up. I give as much as I can even if it did not look better I try and make them feel the more you do it the better it gets. I have trained with the low praise approach as well. It also has its good points but you work and work and don't feel like your making any ground but once you get patted on the back you like YES>>> SO to each his own. (General George S. granmasterchen
i agree with g95champ, i will give praise to them when working techs but i will also give them critical critisism, if they do better they get the praise, i am never mean though.... CheekyMusician
My instructors are pretty good with praise. They don't give you so much that it begins to mean nothing, but they don't withhold it when you deserve it either. I felt that when I first started I got praised for everything. That kept me enthusiastic, though, especially when I felt I was useless and everyone in the class was better than me. Looking back I don't know how my instructors managed to keep a straight face as they praised me for a wobbly, off target, feeble, shin-high mawashi geri, but somehow they did. Now I get praise now and again, but not all the time. If I'm doing pathetically, they'll tell me and tell me how to improve. If I'm being lazy, they might raise their voices a little bit. If I'm doing Ok, I'll maybe get a, "That was good, just try and get it faster/higher/more powerful etc." and if I'm doing well I'll get some praise. Smile. It makes people wonder what you've been up to.
Sibylla
No praise, ever, for nobody, except at the gradings, where you might get one positive comment. I prefer the instructor correcting me instead of complementing me.. I think it is good, because at my last school there was a lot of praise going around, for different kind of reasons...and people got jealous and unsure because of it. SBN Doug
I don't know if I'd call it praise. "That's better" or "looks like you're improving on that". More possitive feedback than what I consider praise. Kuk Sool Won - 4th danEvil triumphs when good men do nothing.
Kyokushin
My Sensei is one to be very critical about what we're doing, but every now and then he'll give you a compliment. I prefer this b/c it really makes you learn karate better, and when you do get praise you feel really good about yourself. Now I'm at a new dojo and their really positive and while that's nice it doesn't help me get any better at my techniques or kata. I actually didn't realize how good my Sensei's approach was until I matched my skills with the brown belts of the new school. telsun
My sensei very, very rarely gives praise. In the 4 years I have been with him he has praised me 4 times. Sometimes I get frustrated at the lack of praise and just will him to say "that's good" or something but it doesn't come. The way I receive praise from him, IMO, is at the lack of correction. You see sensei is extremely critical (although not overly critical) and will correct us alot. When he corrects my peers but not me I except this as his way of saying that I am doing it right/ well. I have also over heard him praise me openly to others.......... But he doesn't that I know..........shhhhhh!!!! I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!" Fenris-wolf
Praise is good, but sparingly. My instructor is stubbornly positive, but it tends to be contructive critism rather than praise most of the time. Also means that when you get complemented you're very happy and excited.
