A gift for sensei

Recommended Posts

It is my sensei's birthday on Friday. I cannot make it to his party  but I have brought him a gift to give to him on Saturday when I go training.

I got him a book which looks at Christian belief and karate training (he is a christian). What I would like to know is: Do you think that I should inscribe the book?

I was thinking of writing something like:

"Dave

An inspiration in my karate and my life.

Terry"

Please, I would really value your opinions. Should I write anything, if so what do you think I should write? Or should I just leave it blank :-?

I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"

Well, personally I'd feel a little wierd doing it. But if I did, I'd address him by title & name, to make it more formal.

I know what you mean. I think that it may embarass him and me.......so maybe I won't.

Perhaps the gesture is in the gift alone.

I would inscribe it as it may become a cherished memory of his and he may experience the same joy everytime he opens it and reads the inscription-especially if he means that much to you.

IF I were going to write something I just get a card to go with it.

do you have a formal or informal relationship with your instructor, i am on an informal relationship with my main instructor, we hang out and stuff when i go back home, so i would give the inscription, but that is because i am on more open terms with him than i am with other instructors and their students

My instructor and I are close. I am his number 1 and we have travelled together to seminars, gashaku's, etc.

I have only ever attended one social event with him outside of MA's and obviously he has invited me to his party.

I would say that we have a strong student, sensei bond. He has been an influence on my karate via his superb instruction and skill. He has also influenced my life with his Christian values.

Welllll, you didn't mention that before. From a Christian standpoint, then I wouldn't feel uncomfortable.

If you guys have been tight for a while, then why not. I change my vote to "Do it".
