Sho-ju Posted June 28, 2003 Posted June 28, 2003 I recently work out with a guy that breaks the arms on his dummy. He also rips the bark off of trees with is tiger palm, I'm new to kung fu, is this the norm after years of study?
SandanPJ Posted June 29, 2003 Posted June 29, 2003 The true tiger palm is to rip flesh from bone...so bark from a tree is a pretty good start
Prodigal Son Posted June 29, 2003 Posted June 29, 2003 Yeah right. Aside from the fact that most Jong arms are made of hardwood, and because of their length and shape they are as hard as hell... (ever tried to snap a short stick ? Well try one that's short, 3 inches thick, rounded and made of varnished mahogany. No way is that snapping !) ...And even if he does have that kind of power, a floor standing Jong would move before it's arm snapped, and a wall mounted dummy's frame would go before the arms - it's simple leverage. But why would he want to break the arms on his dummy in the first place? We don't train power on the dummy - it is used for cultivating good lines and shapes. So if he is hitting it that hard, why is he using it ? Perhaps he moves silently and cat-like around his sandbag... And hardwood dummy arms are so very expensive... Maybe you should ask him to demonstrate for you. (But personally, if he tried to snap the arms on my Jong, I'd be forced to kick his monkey a s s.) Regarding his tiger claw, I can't comment - but it must be reassuring for him to have such a skill, especially with all the trees starting fights out there these days. sansoouser Posted June 29, 2003 Posted June 29, 2003 where can you find out about the tiger palm and what style is it? The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain.
Sho-ju Posted June 29, 2003 Author Posted June 29, 2003 The gentleman I’m referring to weights 300lbs. healthy, and has studied kung fu for 25 years. The wooden arms…I have don’t know what they are made of, but he makes his own and sells them. His dummy was planted in the ground in his backyard under a carport. Watching a big guy work the dummy looks silly because of the soft movements and I question the validity of using (and perhaps I was a little sarcastic) the dummy and he demonstrated the power that you gain after years of training. As for ripping the bark off trees…I don’t why he would do it but I wouldn’t want to be on the end of palm if we were sparring. His style includes 5 animal forms, shaolin something or other and wing chun. I couldn’t have it wrong I new to the kung fu world. Thanks for your patience.
jmd161 Posted July 12, 2003 Posted July 12, 2003 You know ppl amaze me how they think they know how every style of kung fu works. Not all styles use the Jong the sameway.I've heard of ppl breaking the arms on thier jongs before.Wing Chun uses the jong differently from Choy Lay Fut.Both styles use it differently than we do in Black Tiger. In Black Tiger we use the wooden dummy and also the Black Tiger Grinder Dummy. It's made from cement and has two rows of moving iron arms. This is what it looks like. http://www.black-tiger.org/lan7.jpg jeff The Basics Are The Hidden Secret To Kung Fu Master The Basics.
WC-Strayder Posted July 12, 2003 Posted July 12, 2003 I have seen my main sifu brake the arm of my clubs dummy, so don't you dare say it can't happend!. The next thing you might say now is that this was pre aranged... but you are wrong. He had never been in our kwoon before and it was not his intention to do it, it just happend. I can, on the other hand, go for the teori of some bad wood in the arm, but the wood looked just fine, so I really don't know. He just hit it clean off. If the first lesson was a failure, then you know that skydiving isn't for you!
Prodigal Son Posted July 14, 2003 Posted July 14, 2003 I'm not saying I know it all, or that it can't be done - EVERYTHING can be done if you believe like I do that failure can only be defined in relation to time limits - four minute mile and all that. I'm just saying that I have heard SO many people bragging about how strong a friend of a friend is, but so few of us have seen it. And dojo demonstrations and Indian Rope Tricks to impress gullible students are a dime a dozen. How many of you remember Kateda ? >>>PS<<< ------------------------------------------------------------------------Self-defense is only an illusion, a dark cloak beneath which lurks a razor-sharp dagger waiting to be plunged into the first unwary victim.
